The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17, 1775 during the siege of Boston at the start of the American Revolutionary War. The battle is named after Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts. It was the original objective of both the Colonial and British troops, although the majority of combat took place on an adjacent hill. On June 13, the leaders of the Colonial forces in Boston learned that the British were planning to send out troops to fortify the unoccupied nearby hills, which would give them control of Boston Harbor. In response, 1,200 Colonial troops stealthily occupied Bunker Hill and nearby Breeds Hill. At daybreak on June 17th, the British attacked. It took three assaults on the Colonial positions, however the area was then captured by the British. The Colonists retreated over Bunker Hill, leaving the British in control of the peninsula.
