The national anthem of the Republic of China (中華民國國歌) is informally called "San Min Chu-i" (三民主義) from its opening line, which cites the "Three Principles of the People," a central political philosophy of the Kuomintang. The text for the anthem was adapted from a 1924 speech by Sun Yat-sen, who was the first head of state of the Republic of China. The Kuomintang party held a contest for the accompanying music, and Cheng Maoyun's composition was chosen for the national anthem.

The "Three Principles of the People" was adopted in 1930 as the national anthem of China (then the Republic of China). Following its defeat by the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the government of the Republic of China was relegated to the Island of Taiwan, where "San Min Chu-i" remains the national anthem. The war ended with Communist control of mainland China, and the ROC anthem was replaced by the "March of the Volunteers" in Mainland China.
