God Save the Tsar (Боже, Царя храни) was the national anthem of the Russian Empire from 1833 until its collapse in 1917. The song was composed by violinist Alexei Lvov, with lyrics by poet Vasily Zhukovsky.
Prior to the adoption of God Save the Tsar, the national anthem of the empire was The Prayer of the Russians, set to the tune of God Save the King. A number of monarchies used this tune at the time, including the British, German, and Russian empires. Tsar Nicholas I ordered Lvov to compose a new anthem for the empire in 1833, prompting Lvov to compose God Save the Tsar.
