A bright fireball tore over western Kentucky at 1:33 a.m. CDT on September 10, 2026. NASA cameras and GOES-18/19 lightning mappers caught it.
NASA event 20260910-063250: a piece of comet debris about 16 inches across and 200 pounds. It entered 80 miles above Crutchfield, raced southwest at about 145,000 mph, and broke up 48 miles above Mabel. Energy: about 50 tons of TNT. Shower: September epsilon Perseids.
How many people saw it? No public count. NASA’s AMS event field is blank. IMO says a cyberattack hit aging servers. The fireball reporting stack is only partly back.
The American Meteor Society is not NASA and not the Boston weather group. It is a small Geneseo, N.Y. 501(c)(3) — roughly $6,000 a year, unpaid officers, kept going by a 1993 Clinton B. Ford endowment, dues, and donations. NASA uses AMS reports. NASA does not fund that website.
