Welcome digital comrades to the first faculty reading of Naropa's 2024 Summer Writing Program season. This marks the 50th anniversary of Naropa's "100 Year Project".
Reading this evening, 20 June 2024, will be:

Mónica A. Jiménez is a poet and historian. Her research and writing explore the intersections of law, race, and empire in Latin America and the Caribbean. Her book, Making Never Never Land: Race and Law in the Creation of Puerto Rico, which offers a legal history of race and exception in the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico, will be published in June 2024 by the University of North Carolina Press.
She has received fellowships in support of her work from the Institute for Citizens and Scholars (formerly the Woodrow Wilson Foundation), the Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School. In 2021, she was named an inaugural Letras Boricuas Fellow by the Flamboyan Arts Foundation. Her scholarly and creative writing has appeared or is forthcoming in WSQ: Women Studies Quarterly, Latino Studies, CENTRO: Journal, and sx salon, among others.
STELLA CORSO is the author of the poetry collections Green Knife (Rescue Press, 2023) and TANTRUM (Rescue Press, 2017), selected by Douglas Kearney for the Black Box Prize, along with the chapbooks Taboo Vivant (blush lit, 2022) and Wind & the Augur (Sixth Finch, 2021). She is a founding member of the Connecticut River Valley Poets’ Theater (CRVPT) and the current Managing Editor of Denver Quarterly and FIVES.
VALERIE HSIUNG is a poet and the author of eight collections of poetry, prose, and hybrid writing, including The pedestrian (Nightboat Books, forthcoming), The Naif (Ugly Duckling Presse), The only name we can call it now is not its only name (Counterpath), featured in BOMB and The Poetry Project Newsletter, To love an artist (Essay Press), featured in Full Stop and Cleveland Review of Books, and outside voices, please (CSU). Her writing has appeared in print (Annulet, BathHouse Journal, digital vestiges, The Georgia Review, mercury firs, The Nation, Verse), in flesh (Treefort Music Festival, Common Area Maintenance, The Poetry Project), in sound waves (Montez Press Radio, Hyle Greece), and other forms of particulate matter. Her work has been supported by Foundation for Contemporary Arts, PEN America, Lighthouse Works, and public streets and trails she has walked on and hummed along for years. Born in the Year of the Earth Snake and raised by Chinese-Taiwanese immigrants in Cincinnati, Ohio, she now lives in the mountains of Colorado where she makes fragrance & teaches at Naropa’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics.
ANDREA ABI-KARAM is a trans, SWANA, punk poet-performer cyborg, workshop facilitator, and activist. Their chapbook, THE AFTERMATH (Commune Editions, 2016), queers Fanon’s vision of how poetry fails to inspire revolution. Under the full Community Engagement Scholarship, Andrea received their MFA in Poetry from Mills College. With Drea Marina they co-hosted Words of Resistance [2012-2017] a monthly, radical, QTPOC open floor poetry series to fundraise for political prisoners’ commissary funds. Selected by Bhanu Kapil, Andrea’s debut EXTRATRANSMISSION (Kelsey Street Press, 2019) is a poetic critique of the U.S. military’s role in the War on Terror. Andrea toured with Sister Spit in 2018 and has performed at RADAR, The Poetry Project, The STUD, Basilica Soundscape, TransVisionaries, Southern Exposure, Counterpulse, & Radius for Arab-American Writers. They have taught workshops at the New York Public Library, San Francisco Public Library, Naropa University, Rock Paper Scissors, Wesleyan University, Barnard College, Seattle University, Bay Area Trans Writers, and FARR Concordia. With Kay Gabriel, they co-edited We Want It All: An Anthology of Radical Trans Poetics (Nightboat Books, 2020). Chosen by Simone White, Andrea’s second book, Villainy (Nightboat Books, 2021) reimagines militant collectivity in the wake of the Ghost Ship Fire and the Muslim Ban. Villainy was a 2022 Finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Transgender Poetry. They are a recipient of the inaugural 2023 Jerome Alternates Grant Award & are the Spring 2024 Black Mountain Institute UNLV Breakout Writer. They are currently writing a poet’s novel about crushes.
