The Occupational Health and Safety Section (OHS) of the American Public Health Association (APHA) honored Nancy Zuniga, MPH with its 2018 Lorin Kerr Award, which recognizes young professionals for their sustained and outstanding efforts and dedication to improve the lives of workers. Ms. Zuniga manages the Workers Health Program at the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA). Her work involves occupational health, community organizing around health issues and workers’ rights. Ms. Zuniga is a fearless and committed leader, educator and organizer. For many years she has devoted her work to social justice and building the worker movement through popular education. She is a former OHIP intern and a COSH activist, presently on the board of SoCalCOSH where she helps lead trainings with day laborers and household workers, coordinates Worker Memorial Week events and develops bilingual workshops for the National COSH Annual Conference. Through popular education, Ms. Zuniga has had the opportunity to transform her own lived experience as daughter of an immigrant household worker, into a shared human experience and struggle with other low-wage workers. She graduated from UCLA with a BS in Chemistry and completed her Maters in Public health at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. However, she attributes her evolving growth and learning to the knowledge of Promotoras de Salud (community health workers), and long-time community leaders, comrades and mentors. This award is named for Lorin Kerr (1909-1991), a life-long activist who served for more than 40 years as the physician for the United Mine Workers. The award was presented at the OHS Section’s awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the San Diego Convention Center, during the APHA’s 146th Annual Meeting & Expo from Nov. 10-14, 2018.
