Spindle Encoder - CNC Lathe Threading Kent VanderVelden 2021-10-12 | Threading on a CNC lathe requires a spindle encoder so the tool makes consistent pitch passes. A rotary encoder is added to a South Bend SB1001 lathe DIY CNC and attached to a Mesa 7i76e board. LinuxCNC drives the lathe to perform the threading operations. While concept is sound, a new pulley is needed to make the project perfect, but the parts will not arrive for a couple of weeks. Probing tool-length offsets is done into LinuxCNC with an automatic tool length sensor. The sensor has two electrical connections to a Mesa 7i76e board for detecting the tool and for protecting against over travel, and an air solenoid controls an air blast to clear chips between the probe and tool. Reproducibility on a CNC retrofitted mill is high but accuracy is so-so. CNC Home Switch Installation LinuxCNC Kent VanderVelden 2020-08-18 | Home switches are added to a LinuxCNC retrofitted mill to create a convenient and consistent starting position on startup. LinuxCNC then provides software based hard limits for each axis, preventing collisions with axis endpoints, and verifies loaded files are within the work envelope of the machine. With small inductive sensors, the home switches can be tucked away, protected from chips and coolant. While hardware limit switches are meant to save the machine for an expected over travel, home switches are used every time the machine starts and software can be used to simulate limit switches, especially if the position is driven by closed-loop motors. PM25 BLDC spindle drive replacement from Anaheim Automation Kent VanderVelden 2018-11-29 | A BLDC drive from Anaheim Automation is tested as a replacement to stock spindle drive of the PM25 mill. The stock drive is not documented, lacks a fault signal, and responses slowly to direction and speed changes limiting rigid tapping. The Anaheim Automation MDC300-120151 drive has advantages but with the stock PM25 spindle motor, there are some gotchas including poor torque at low speeds, poor speed regulation, and a few others. Rigid tapping and thread milling on a PM25 LinuxCNC mill Kent VanderVelden 2018-11-19 | Rigid tapping and threading milling are attempted on a Precision Matthews PM25 LinuxCNC CNC conversion. To allow rigid tapping, a spindle encoder is added by attaching a rotary encoder to the top of the drawbar. The differential signals from the encoder are converted to single-ended and then passed to the fourth axis encoder input of a Pico Systems Universal Stepper Controller. LinuxCNC is the CNC controller. With a 2500P/rev encoder, rigid tapping works well at 400 RPM, but the required sampling rate is too high to support 800 RPM. The improvements include a switch to tell LinuxCNC when the spindle is locked, preventing attempts at motion while locked, and a change that hastens operation. The spindle lock is installed inside of the head to avoid changing the belt drive or the belt guard. Faster tools changes greatly improves the productivity of the CNC conversion. Here I install a Cincoze P2002 panel PC from Logic Supply into a new plant phenotyping machine. I had hoped to avoid the need for a PLC by using GPIO pins on the panel PC, but they don't work well with Linux currently. The PoE ports will eliminate the need for a separate power injector. The panel PC is installed into a Misumi cover panel to create a clean and professional look.
