#mindfulness #eveningchant #PlumVillageApp #ThichNhatHanhSpace, Time, and The Ultimate Dimension | TWOII podcast | Episode #54Plum Village App2023-07-01 | This week, we bring you a very special joint episode of The Way Out Is In and fellow podcast Outrage + Optimism, which explores the stories behind climate change headlines. From the peace and tranquility of the International Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino speak with Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac.
Christiana Figueres, a student of Thich Nhat Hanh, was one of the architects of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, and is a valued member of the Plum Village Sangha. Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) from 2010 to 2016, she is also the co-founder of Global Optimism, co-host of Outrage + Optimism, and co-author of the bestselling The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis.
Tom Rivett-Carnac is a political strategist, author, and podcaster who has spent more than 20 years working to address the climate and ecological crises. He is also a Founding Partner of Global Optimism, co-host of the podcast Outrage + Optimism, and co-author of The Future We Choose.
Listeners of both podcasts are invited to join an intimate and deep conversation which covers the spiritual elements missing from the climate movement; moving beyond linear timelines into exponential transformation; how to develop the power within ourselves to drive change; non-attachment to views; listening without judgment; what happens when we all stop; and much more. Plus, what is spiritual power and how can it support us?
So bring your tea to the table and let the radical collaboration begin.

#ThichNhatHanh #mindfulness #PlumVillageApp #EngagedBuddhismLet Go of Pride To Truly Love: Practicing the Fourth Mantra | Thich Nhat Hanh (EN subtitles)Plum Village App2023-06-28 | In this excerpt from a Dharma talk given by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (place unknown), Thay tells the story of "The Young Married Lady of Nam Xuong" to teach the practice of the fourth mantra "Darling, I suffer. Please help." This excerpt, originally named "Letting Go of Pride to Truly love," is posted by Lang Mai (Plum Village's Vietnamese YouTube Channel) as part of the "The Basics of the Plum Village Practice" playlist. Available with English subtitles on the FREE Plum Village App https://plumvillage.app/ too.
------- "When we get angry, when we suffer, we have to learn to admit 'This... is anger. This is suffering.' Then, if the other person asks, 'Dear, are you angry with me?', we have to have the courage to admit, 'Yes, dear, I'm angry with you.' We should say that. Don't say something like, 'Angry? No, I’m not. Why do I have to be angry?' It means we don’t recognize what’s really going on in the present moment.
"And if we're a good mindfulness practitioner, we don’t wait until the other person asks us this question. We should go to the other person and share honestly that, 'I’m angry. I’m in pain. And I need you.' That would be very well done."

------- "In the Discourse of The Four Establishments of Mindfulness, in the contemplation of mental formations, i.e. “contemplation of the mind in the mind,” it goes like this: “When anger manifests, a practitioner knows ‘There’s the mental formation of anger. The mental formation of anger is present in me.’ But the sutra also said, “When there’s no mental formation of anger,” we have to be aware that “the mental formation of anger is not present in me.”
"If we read the sutra, without the eye of a practitioner, we’ll think, 'Why do they have to make it so wordy?' But in fact, it’s not wordy at all ! Not a single word of the sutra is to spare. When you don’t have the mental formation of anger in you, that’s exactly the moment you have a lot of happiness. But at that moment, we don’t feel happy at all."

------- More and more people suffer from depression, to such an extent that suicide appears to be the only way out for them: out of their suffering. Suicide, we know, is a sensitive topic, so sensitive that people tend not to talk about it. And that seems to be part of the problem.
Plum Village monastic Sister Dang Nghiem doesn't shy away from difficult topics. In this very personal and touching sharing, full of lived experiences, wisdom, tears, practical suggestions and a profound song at the end, Sister Dang Nghiem opens her heart about the choice to end life, inter-being and the deep wish to transform.
"I made the commitment to transform my sadness and despair, my suffering, so that I can transmit healing, transformation, peace and acceptance", she says.
I recommend this video to anybody who has thoughts about suicide (regularly), to their family members and friends, to those who have lost a loved one by suicide, and to those of us who want to have a deeper understanding of life.
After watching this video you might start to trust that even the darkest despair can lead to a life of true liberation and light.

The two presenters reflect on how the Buddhist teachings and lessons offered by this series of public events can help people create a healthier culture of service, and deal with both personal suffering and the collective suffering of climate destruction, biodiversity loss, and social injustice. Also, what is fierce compassion and how can we practice with it?
Brother Phap Huu further shares on “opening new Dharma doors”, the adaptation of old teachings to new cultures; the importance of music in engaged Buddhism and why incorporating the flavors of contemporary music matters; Thay as peace activist and poet; the message of the song ‘Little Star’ (which you get to listen to!); dealing with the energy of anger; deep connection; and more. And what did Thay say when Brother Phap Huu rapped at a Plum Village festivity?
Jo also shares about innovation in the Plum Village tradition; resilience and guilt in the climate movement; novel teachings and itineraries for retreats; the deep spiritual dimension of climate work; radical compassion; forgiveness and transforming the system; nondiscrimination around suffering; and more.

#mindfulness #strongemotions #ThichNhatHanh #PlumVillageAppTo the Root of Addictions | with Sister Dang NghiemPlum Village App2023-06-12 | Most of us, young and old, are addicted to something. Addictions can take many forms: alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex, games, work, phone, eating, shopping, etc. etc. Even patterns in our thinking can be addictive.
In this sharing Sister Dang Nghiem invites us to look deeper at our addictions, and to understand the roots of it. Why are we addicted? Only when we understand the deeper emotions - and sometimes trauma - underlying our addictions, we can start to heal and to transform.
Most people don't want to face their addiction, as they would have to face the underlying emotions. These emotions are often so painful, or so dark, that people do everything to cover them up and to run away from them ... they look for solace in alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex, games, work, phone, eating, shopping, etc. to numb themselves. But by doing so, they create more suffering, for themselves and for others.
With deep understanding Sister Dang Nghiem explains the working of our emotions, and shows us a path of healing: the way out is in. The key and power of healing lies inside each one of us. When we learn to be really present for our deep emotions, to embrace and transform them, we can liberate ourselves from repetitive patterns of suffering. In the same way we can learn how to be really present for family members, friends and collegues, who struggle with addictions.
As Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh always said: "To love is to be there. How can we love if we are not there?" We breathe mindfully with our emotions, we walk mindfully with our emotions, we embrace them, and this way we heal. We can do this for ourselves and for our loved ones. Healing our addictions, is healing our world.
On behalf of Sister Dang Nghiem I wish you all a beautiful journey. Coming home to yourself, a world of peace, joy, true love and equanimity is possible.

Available with English subtitles on the FREE Plum Village App https://plumvillage.app/ too.
------- "A practitioner should know how to handle their body because the body is also the foundation of countless sufferings and countless happinesses. The body gives rise to the feelings. For that reason, a practitioner should meditate on the body. Meditate on the body, know how to take care of the body, know how to handle the body. Practicing is not only just about the mind. It's also about the body."

#mindfulness #ThichNhatHanh #plumvillageappListeners’ Questions: Responding from the Heart (Part Two) | TWOII podcast | Episode #52Plum Village App2023-06-02 | In this episode, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino are joined again by frequent podcast guest Sister True Dedication (Sister Hien Nghiem). Together, they respond to further questions from listeners in this second part of our first question and answer session of 2023.
We hope that their answers will show how the teachings can help people who are in distress or are dealing with critical issues - but also simply how to find more joy in our lives.
This installment’s questions and answers cover topics ranging from how to create a practice with no sangha to how to develop a spiritual practice in busy, stressful lives; how to find meaningful communities and connections and become aware of our own story and that of our ancestors; understanding the complexity of ancestry and transmitted wisdom; belonging and home; intention and aspiration; the quality of presence; how to engage mindfully in a policing role; the difference between mindfulness and concentration; finding the sweetness of joy in life and making simple things your joy - and much more.
To give a flavor of Plum Village Q and A sessions, the two monastics share memories including a story about Thay singing a song during a Q and A session for children.
And what question do you think people should be asking? Or don't ask enough? There’s an answer to this one, too.
Thank you for listening, and for sharing your deep questions!

#mindfulness #bodyscan #guidedmeditation #PlumVillageAppBefriend your Strong Emotions | with Sister Dang NghiemPlum Village App2023-05-29 | All human beings experience strong emotions, like sadness, anger, insecurity, jealousy, self-doubt, regret, yearning, etc. We all have them, but as a child we don't necessarily learn how to deal with strong emotions. Not at home, nor in school. While we do learn how to read, write and calculate, our inner world remains as untrodden territory. Our strong emotions, however, have a major impact on our lives.
That is why Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village community consider understanding our strong emotions to be one of the most fundamental practices. Understanding our emotions is essential to understanding ourselves. By befriending our emotions, we befriend ourselves, or as Sister Dang Nghiem says: we become soulmates to ourselves.
In this personal account, Sister Dang Nghiem compares strong emotions with a wave, a storm, a food (nutriment), and a habit (addiction). An emotion by itself does not have a long life span. But our reaction to an emotion can be long, making the emotion grow bigger and stronger—like a wave or a storm, to finally overwhelm us. So, it is essential to understand how we react to an emotion. Awareness is key. If we are not aware (of our emotions), we are lost. We will be tossed around like small boats on the high waves, and blown away by heavy storms ... and still then, we often have no idea what is happening to us.
If we are not aware of our emotions, how can we take care of them? How can we heal and transform? Our mindful breathing, and mindful steps, as Sister Dang Nghiem says, can bring us back to ourselves, to our body and to our mind. Only when we are present, can we see what is going on around us, and inside of us. Only when we are present, can we love, care and embrace. Through the practice of mindfulness we become steady and stable, and when a strong emotion comes up we can smile to it with equanimity (mental calmness).

We hope that the answers will help show how the teachings can help people who are in distress or are dealing with critical issues - but also simply how to find more joy in our lives. Because we have received so many questions - around 200! - further answers will be given in a second part, to be released next week.
The presenters are joined by frequent podcast guest Sister True Dedication (Sister Hien Nghiem). Topics which they address cover a wide range, from how to be brave, to speaking your truth and being fully yourself, and handling strong emotions and dealing with hate. Responses include practical examples, draw on both personal experiences and Buddhist wisdom, and cover numerous other topics, such as: non-attachment and healthy attachments; getting in touch with our patterns; building inner confidence; working with our negative seeds; letting go of pain; practicing with impermanence; the energy of prayer and interbeing; the power and purpose of Thay’s favorite chant, Namo Avalokiteshvara; and more. Plus: what is a mudra?
The three presenters also share their favorite daily reminders, sayings, or mantras for bringing them back to the path when they get distracted.
Thank you for listening, and for your questions! Tune in next week for part two.

Available with English subtitles on the FREE Plum Village App https://web.plumvillage.app/item/remember-your-insights-live-them-dont-blame-the-lettuce-en-subtitles too.
------- "We know that when listening to Thay talk, we can understand. And we can suffer less immediately as we listen to the talk. That can possibly happen because we begin to have insights, we begin to see clearly. But that clear-seeing alone is not enough. That clear-seeing must be applied to our daily life. That clear-seeing must be lived while we're doing dishes, while we're cooking, while we're gardening, while we're driving.[...]
"We resolve to live today exactly according to the insights we have when we read the sutras or sit in meditation earlier. Because, although we have it in us, we don't live it. Although we awaken, we don't embody that awakening in our daily life."
After that, Thay shared about how he reminded himself to live his insights when strong emotions emerge thanks to the help of the drawing which we may call for now, "Don't blame the lettuce!".

------- TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: At 4:54, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh used the term "ba la mật" in Vietnamese, which literally means "paramitas" or "types of perfection in Dharma training".
Because "paramitas" has a broad meaning and means slightly differently in different Buddhist traditions (i.e. 10 perfections in Theravāda Buddhism, 4 perfections in Sarvāstivāda, and basically 6 perfections in Mahāyāna Buddhism - according to Wikipedia), the translator must consider the context in which this word sits (i.e. at 4:54, Thay spoke about coming back to the breath and only focusing on the breath when strong emotions come) and decide to use "samadhi," or "meditative concentration," the fifth type of perfection in Mahāyāna Buddhism, in place of "paramitas" to represent this big word in order to clear up any confusion on the viewers' part at this point of the talk.
In the Plum Village tradition, mindfulness of the breath is one of the methods that give birth to concentration, which in turn leads to insights, or right understanding of the reality of life, which can break us free from the wrong views we usually attach to amidst the manifestation of inner storms (such as anger, hatred, or resentment) and attain liberation from these afflictive states of mind.

Together, they discuss what it is to love ourselves and what a difference it can make. Plus, why is it so difficult to change? What should we be mindful of? And what is love to us?
Brother Phap Huu further considers how helpful insights can blossom; attaining new views of growth in spirituality; unconditional love; what it is to be stuck and how to unstick ourselves; ‘striving’ energy, perceptions, and aspirations; creating new stories; and acceptance.
Jo starts with a confession before sharing about epiphanies; times when one’s story is more important than one’s happiness; self-worth; cultivating change at the edges; and mindful reminders.
The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu.

Also contemplated are communities of two and other friendships we have in our lives, all with their joys and challenges.

#mindfulness #LarryWard #PlumVillageAppLive Our Life Whole: The Surface and the Depth of Our Being | Thich Nhat Hanh (EN subtitles)Plum Village App2023-05-03 | This is a 14-minute excerpt from the Dharma talk "Transforming the Fears Inside" given by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh on February 04, 1993, in the Upper Hamlet, Plum Village France. Available with English subtitles on the FREE Plum Village App https://plumvillage.app/ too.
------- "In the being of us humans, there’s depth and there’s surface. Let us train ourselves to live the depth of our being also. Instead of living the surface only. Going about our daily life, perhaps we’re dealing with people or with things, or getting our work done using only the surface of our being. And sometimes we think we’re only that surface. Fact is, we’re much deeper than that.
"Studying and training ourselves in mindfulness means practicing living the depth of our being. The surface of ours has been pushed around by the depth of our being. We easily react. Constantly on the verge of tears and laughter. We do this, we do that. We talk about this, we talk about that.[...]
"So, sometimes we've done things in a certain way but we don't know why we've done it that way. We've thought in a certain way but we don't know why we've thought that way. We've spoken in a certain way but we don't know why we've spoken that way.[...] For that reason, our life is not deep. Because we’ve only lived half of it — or even less than half.
"[P]racticing means to connect these two halves of ourselves together. Whenever we speak, think, or do something, we should be aware of in which parts in the depth of our being do all these speaking, thinking, and doing have their roots."
