Day One: Myanmar election results, NLD looks to take it all
Estimates were that about 80% of Myanmar’s electorate came out Sunday to cast their ballot, and while it may take a good week to get the results in, the initial tallies are putting Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party with about 80% of the votes in densely populated central regions and about 65% of the votes in the states of Mon and Kayin. "Victory or failure, that is not important. What is important is how we win or lose. Those who lose should bravely concede, while those who win should humbly celebrate the victory. That is a true democracy,” Suu Kyi said.
Australia’s Christmas Island is no holiday
Officials say protesters have set several fires on Christmas Island, an Australian-run detention center. This was following the death of an Iranian-born asylum seeker. Apparently, the body of the escaped detainee was found on the island’s cliffs Saturday, a full day after the individual escaped. That looks to be the trigger that started everything.
Travel Warning: Philippines bullet scam
There’s a scam at Manila's international airport that has been creating an atmosphere of fear for travelers entering the country. It seems some security staff are planting bullets in their luggage. Visitors are then asked to pay a small fee to persuade the staff to turn a blind eye as it is illegal in the Philippines to possess "live" ammunition. Passengers end up paying between US$10 and US$640 in bribes.
