In today’s video I’m going to share my favorite color gray background and how to choose which color is right for you.
If you’ve ever perused the Savage Universal website or looked at their sample paper guide you may have noticed that they have more than dozen different versions of gray backgrounds, which begs the question, which one to get?
There are two things to consider when asking this question:
1. The Tonality:
The lightness or darkness, do you want a lighter gray, almost white, or a dark rich gray, almost black.
2. The Coolness
The other thing to consider is the coolness, do you want the color to be more neutral or have a bit of warmth, closer to beige.
So which background so I use?
To be honest, I have a bunch!
The color that I use most often is Fashion Gray. It’s a little bit lighter and a tiny bit cooler but generally neutral. I use this a lot for my fashion editorials.
When I want something more dramatic I usually go with Thunder Gray which is a bit darker.
I also use TV Gray, which is a bit warmer. I use this gray if I’m photographing a subject where I would want to have their skin tone appear a little bit warmer or their wearing a cream dress and I want to unify the tones of the background with the subject.
So why would I go with something cooler for fashion editorials? I like the coolness of the background and being that skin tones are generally a bit warmer there’s a little bit more pop and contrast.
So if you could only get 1 gray background which would it be?
Well… ultimately it depends on what your needs are, but I know my choice would be Fashion Gray!
