This old wooden bench sat in my grandparents’ store in Springfield, Colorado for decades—tucked away upstairs, collecting dust (and apparently water damage from a leaky roof). When my grandfather passed away, my dad told me to take it if I wanted it. I had no idea at the time that I might be holding a 100-year-old antique bench—complete with horsehair upholstery and what looks like original train station hardware!

• Using vinegar and heat to remove water stains
• Testing dark wax vs. wood stain
• Applying leather conditioner to revive old upholstery
• Working with stain + polyurethane in one
• Light sanding and second coat application
• Preserving the original character without stripping it down
I share the mistakes, the second-guessing, and the “holy moly” moment when the leather restoration completely transformed the piece.
