What started as a gift for our good friend, Chris Barnardo of the Wand Company, turned into the biggest model-making project I've ever attempted. My goal was simple: build a movie-quality spaceship using real Hollywood movie model making miniature techniques—complete with practical lighting, greeblies, weathering, battle damage, fiber optics, and a fully illuminated display stand. The catch? I only had a few weeks before flying to England to hand-deliver it. What followed was one setback after another: failed prints, broken fiber optics, glue disasters, lighting failures, redesigns, impossible deadlines... and one accident that nearly destroyed the entire project just as it was almost finished.
Based on Advances in the Art of Being by Chris Barnardo, this 2-foot replica of the Orca became one of the most challenging—and rewarding—builds I've ever taken on.
If you love: Movie miniatures, practical special effects, sci-fi model making, 3D printing, prop building, and behind-the-scenes filmmaking... then you're in the right place.
👍 If you enjoy the build, don't forget to Like, Subscribe, and ring the bell! The adventure continues as we travel to England to surprise Chris with the finished model—and visit The Wand Company for even more incredible behind-the-scenes experiences.
