"It came to me in a dream" says Nigel Carr, writer of Come on England (You Better Believe It), an uplifting England football anthem written for the World Cup. Waking with the melody and chorus still fresh in his mind, he immediately wrote down the lyrics before contacting acclaimed producer Mike Bennett to bring the project to life.
Mike Bennett's production pedigree spans decades and includes work with Toyah, The Fall, Ian Brown, The Specials, Fuzzbox, Fat White Family and The Honeyz, helping shape the song into a rousing celebration of English football and national pride.
Written to inspire supporters and celebrate England's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Come on England (You Better Believe It) has been described by many as the people's England song thanks to its infectious chorus, uplifting message, genuine grassroots spirit and the incredible roster of musicians playing on the record.
The powerful lead performance, by Melanie Williams, best known for her work with Sub Sub on Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use), Peter Hook, David Morales, Frankie Knuckles and Hacienda Classical, combines with Ian Carr's vocals to create a memorable and emotional centrepiece.
Adding to its community spirit is the inclusion of Chorlton High School Choir, whose backing vocals give the track an uplifting stadium feel. One choir member, Jerrelle Clayton-McKenzie, delivers the song's soaring gospel-inspired closing vocal lines, providing an unforgettable finale.
The lyrics also pay tribute to the incredible achievements of England's women's team, affectionately referring to the Lionesses as "The 'Esses", acknowledging the inspiration they continue to provide to football fans across the country.
