Spoiled Lucia would rather die than be offered to the Forest. Then again her mother, a member of the nobility, raised her to not believe this sacrificial peasant nonsense. So what's she to do when her mother presses her to take part in the ritual in order to restore the family fortune and win her a husband?

- The opening is Lucia dreaming about being in the woods, the stories she's heard and what she's been raised to believe clashing - and her fears that they're real winning out.
- Prudence, Maria's mother, married someone from outside Thornwaithe and lived away from the village for a while. Her time away convinced her the ritual is little more than superstition. When her husband died shortly before Lucia was born, she decided to return to Thornwaithe.
- The forest clearing where Lucia is bathing is a different one from the Forbidden Forest.
- Maria is Lucia's servant and childhood friend. The two used to play pretend games about the fantastical creatures in the forest but Lucia's mother put a stop to that. It's Prudence's terrible influence that's made Lucia pretty nasty, though Maria remains loyal to her.
- The pendant Maria gives her is one of the very few things Maria owns. She insists it'll protect Lucia, though Lucia thinks it's just a token.
