Something a little different from my usual productions, but things became rather eventful in Teignmouth today as the MV Scot Bay ran aground while entering the harbour, causing something of a stir and an attraction as people came down to the beach to watch the events unfold.
The MV Scot Bay was built by Tille Scheepsbouw BV / Kootstertille and launched in December 2001, being originally registered in Rochester before being re-registered to Douglas on the Isle of Man. Having been back in my hometown for a short while, I had noticed the ship anchored off Labrador Bay near Babbacombe for several days prior, having arrived from Ijmuiden in the Netherlands with what is believed to be a cargo of fertiliser. However, coasters such as the Scot Bay are routine in Teignmouth, so I didn't really give it much consideration.
However, this morning, I was looking from my parent's house over the harbour and noticed the vessel stopped in the channel while also showing a noticeable list to starboard, followed soon after by news coming in that it had run aground on a patch of shallow silt in the middle of the River Teign known as the Salty at around 6:30am. With that, I set off down to the back beach and proceeded to document this rare event for posterity. While this isn't the first time a ship has run aground on its way into Teignmouth harbour, they usually undercut the corner at the Point (the narrowest part of the channel), which has happened many times before. However, to run aground on the Salty is a very rare thing indeed.
Regardless, there was much curiosity about the presence of the stricken vessel in the harbour, with the Shaldon ferry having a very profitable day as people piled aboard to get a close up view of the ship. Meanwhile, the Harbour Master was checking the propeller and hull for damage, while the Pilot ferried various personnel back and forth from the quay.
The MV Scot Bay was eventually refloated at the evening high tide around 18:00pm that day and was safely towed to the dock for inspection and unloading.
It's interesting to note that only the day before this, a sailing yacht struck some rocks at the Ness on its way into the Teignmouth harbour channel and sank, though all occupants were rescued unharmed, thus making early April 2025 a very exciting time for the town in terms of maritime activity.
