What you’re watching here took 1.25 seconds in real life. I slowed it down 16x so we can actually see what’s happening.
This anhinga is watching the fish, a small speckled perch. She knows it’s not positioned right. So she flips it. Checks it. Nope. Flips again. Checks. Still not right. Flips. Checks. FOUR TIMES in just over a second until that fish is lined up headfirst for an easy ride into the abyss.
This birds reaction time is so far beyond our ability to even understand what happened that we need to stretch time in order to actually see what happened.
It’s like a dramatic slow motion replay of avian fish flipping perfection. I can hear the commentary now…
Bob: “And she surfaces with a small crappie. The crowd goes silent.”
Jim: “First flip… clean. 90-degree repositioning. Zero splash. The Russian judge is already weeping.”
Bob: “Second flip… OH! Mid-air correction. She read that fish like a novel, Jim.”
Jim: “Third flip… headfirst alignment achieved. Someone just fainted in section four.”
Bob: “Fourth rotation… SHE STICKS IT. HEADFIRST SWALLOW. NOT A SCALE OUT OF PLACE.”
Jim: “Let’s go to the judges… 10… 10… 10… AND A 10 FROM THE NOTORIOUSLY HARSH FRENCH JUDGE!”
Bob: “Historic day for waterfowl athletics.”
