I was introduced to King’s Kaleidoscope through their creative hymn arrangements in the 4 song release “Asaph’s Arrows.” Then a friend dropped their first full length record into my hands and after listening through “Becoming Who We Are” several times, I jumped at the chance to introduce them to the YS family.

In this interview, lead singer Chad Gardner shares more about their music, his background in youth ministry, how youth workers shaped his understanding of the gospel, and what’s on the horizon for the band.

Here are 3 big youth ministry ideas that I took out of the interview:

- Students need a safe place to try and fail in a non-threatening environment.

- Investing in the skills and abilities of our students is important, but that’s not why the kids are valuable. They are valuable just because they are made in God’s image, like we are.

- Affirmation based on performance and criticism based on performance is just a report card and it’s not the gospel. The gospel is that God loves us at our worst.

My top 3 tracks from King’s Kaleidoscope’s “Becoming Who We Are” are:

1 - Felix Culpa
2 - Seek Your Kingdom
3 - Defender
