Today I’m covering Apple TV’s new sci-fi series Murderbot, based on The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. I’ll go over episodes 1 and 2, what’s working so far, and what’s different from the books. We’ll look at some key themes: autonomy, control, violence, choice, and how robots and humans deal with emotions. I’ll also talk about Alexander Skarsgård’s take on Murderbot and the show’s sitcom-style tone.

Murderbot is an American science fiction action comedy television series created by Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz for Apple TV+. It is based on the book series The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, who serves as a consulting producer. The series stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular character. It premiered on May 16, 2025. A security android struggles with emotions and free will while balancing dangerous missions and desire for isolation, evading detection of its self-hacking as it finds its place. A partly-human security cyborg that privately calls itself Murderbot must hide its ability for free thought whilst completing dangerous assignments and is simultaneously drawn to humans and appalled at their weakness.
