PLEASE READ to understand - (lyrics below) - Merry Christmas to all my subscribers and friends! : ) I leave you with the Wassail song - wassail is a drink that was popular in merry old England and other places and went along with caroling - here is what I found online about the tradition: “The word ‘wassail’ comes from the Old Norse salutation ‘ves heill’, which means ‘be in good health’ or ‘be fortunate’. It was originally used as a greeting, but became a drinking toast in England. The term ‘wassail’ has evolved over time, from a greeting to a toast to a drink, and eventually to a custom that includes caroling and other activities…” With this in mind, my video shows our favorite couples and more in a spirit of goodwill, cheer, feasting and song. Every time you see them with a drink - think of it as wassail. ;-) Since most of this is instrumental, I also included some great lines and memorable moments fitting the season. I also like to sometimes show snippets of a Christmas movie I've enjoyed - this time it's The Christmas Candle. : )
Wassail is something we drink every year at the Christmas season. As my gift to you, I give you our recipe for it (note, this is not just a wonderful spiced cider - it is also great for colds, etc - and we make a batch whenever someone in our family shows the symptoms - any time of the year that apple cider is available! lol. ;-) Enjoy - the video, and the recipe! I make large amounts at a time and use an 8 quart pan. If you don’t have that or want that much, just half the recipe.
Wassail, wassail -
1 gallon apple cider
4 cups orange juice
2 small cans (6 oz. each) pineapple juice
Natural strength lemon juice to taste (it calls for 1 cup, but I usually go with a little over ¼ cup, preferring more sweet than sour.)
Whole cloves (2 tsp.)
Cinnamon sticks (2 - 3)
Honey to taste
Combine all ingredients in a large pot and cover. Simmer until heated through, on low heat, stirring frequently. Strain and serve. (If you store any left over in fridge - I always funnel it into the empty plastic container the apple cider came in - be sure and strain all cloves and cinnamon sticks first so it doesn’t become too stout.)
