Filmmaker, actor, and creative entrepreneur Shekhar Kapur is known for iconic films such as Mr. India, Masoom, Elizabeth, Bandit Queen, The Four Feathers, and What's Love Got to Do with It? His biographical period piece, Elizabeth, has been nominated for numerous awards, including the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Filmfare Awards. He has also produced many live shows, such as the Dubai Expo 2022 Musical, in collaboration with A.R. Rahman. In conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy, Kapur evaluates his career journey in cinema and discusses the process of creating powerful visual narratives.
Shekhar Kapur is a filmmaker, actor, television presenter, and entrepreneur. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri, he is best known for Oscar, BAFTA, and Filmfare-winning and nominated films such as Elizabeth the Golden Age, Bandit Queen, and Four Feathers. He has been the President of the Film and Television Institute of India since 2020, was the executive producer of the Bollywood-themed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Bombay Dreams, and films such as The Guru for Universal Studios, set up Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation, and has been on the jury of many international film festivals. Kapur is passionate about the current challenges of environmental sustainability and the role of tech-led storytelling to make an impact.
Sanjoy K. Roy, an entrepreneur of the arts, is the Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 festivals in 42 cities and 17 countries, including the world’s largest literary gathering at the Jaipur Literature Festival and international editions of JLF. He is a founder-trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust, which provides support services for street and working children in the inner city of Delhi, helping over 1,30,000 children benefit from education, training, and residential services. Roy is the co-chair of the Art and Culture Committee of FICCI and former President of Event and Entertainment Management Association. He lectures at and works in collaboration with leading universities worldwide and has been conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa by the University of York, UK, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts and society.
