LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)
Bagatelle for fortepiano in A minor Für Elise [For Elise] WoO 57
Poco moto
Performed by Melvyn Tan, fortepiano
*Though scholars dont know for sure who Elise was, it is more than likely that this piece was actually dedicated to Therese Malfatti (niece of Beethovens physician, Dr. Johann Malfatti) to whom, it seems, the composer proposed marriage. The Elise may be an incorrect transcription of the title by the discoverer Ludwig Nohl. The autographed manuscript has been lost and the piece itself was not published until 1865.
