Peggy Levitt, professor of sociology and the Mildred Lane Kemper Chair of Sociology, presented “Move Over, Mona Lisa: Reimagining What We Read, Look at, and Learn” on November 5.
For almost three decades, Professor Levitt has taught Wellesley students about the deep sociological implications of our most important cultural and educational institutions, including museums, libraries, and schools. Her courses have included Global Arts and Culture, Comparative Perspectives on International Migration and Mobility, Urban Sociology, Sociology of Education, and more.
Her service to the College has been significant. She chaired her department from 2005 to 2008 and from 2015 to 2023, and last spring she hosted international scholars and researchers on campus for a meeting of the Global (De)Centre.
An accomplished scholar, Professor Levitt’s current research examines cultural and intellectual inequality and transnational efforts to provide social welfare across borders.
