Katahdin (or Mount Katahdin) is the northern end of the 2,190 mile long Appalachian Trail and the highest mountain in Maine. Located in Baxter State Park, the highest point is Baxter Peak at 5,269 elevation and takes approximately eight hours from the Katahdin Stream campground. Whether you are doing this as a day hike, starting your SoBo journey or ending your NoBo one, if you continue along the Hunt Trail up to Baxter Peak, you will be hiking a very strenuous 5.2 miles. Along the way, you will see the beautiful Katahdin Stream Falls, traverse the Hunt Spur up through the Gateway and pass Thoreau's Spring along the Tableland. There are several other trails to get down Katahdin as well, and if you're an adrenaline junkie, the Knife's Edge is probably your good idea of a good time. We did this hike in 2019 and after several complaints from our friends about our other 19 minute video, we decided to do a much shorter narrated guide to this hike. Do not attempt this hike in bad weather.
