24 years ago, on May 1st, 2002, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was released to the public, bringing with it an alien open world, full of adventure and mystery, danger and treasures, with so many exciting new sights to see.
Alongside this rich landscape, with all its promising discoveries, came a toolkit, a means for all those who found a home upon Morrowind's shores to build upon it, to make it truly our own, and to craft new adventures, new stories, new possibilities without end.
Since those hectic fast-paced early days, the Morrowind Modding Community has released tens of thousands of mods, building new lands, crafting new experiences, creating new mechanics, and designing all sorts of new adventures to expand upon nearly every aspect of this almost quarter of a century old game.
Our community has come a long, long way since 2002, but far from slowing down with the passing of time, the community has only grown!
In 2025, for the first time in recorded modding history, the Morrowind Modding Community released over 1,900 new mods, an all-time record that defies Morrowind's old age. It was the biggest year in Morrowind's entire history, with new expansions from Tamriel Rebuilt, to new releases from OpenMW, to tens of millions of mod downloads by a growing player base, 2025 was a very bright year indeed.
And that shine has only continued to grow brighter in 2026, and today, on Morrowind's 24th anniversary, it seems only fitting to celebrate the community's creativity, innovation, and industrious spirit with the 2026 Morrowind May Modathon Month Modding Competition, a month-long modding extravaganza to celebrate this amazing game we all love!
Starting on May 1st and going through to June 2nd, the 12th annual Morrowind Modathon is open to any and all participating mods and modders, with plenty of new achievement badges for modders to unlock, weekly random-drawing prizes, new weekly themed challenges, and much more besides!
Since 2015, some 1,800 mods have been submitted for the Morrowind Modathons by hundreds of participating modders, and on our 12th year of hosting this event, I sincerely hope you'll all join us to help continue this proud annual modding tradition!
As for participation, it's easy, when you go to release your mod on the Nexus, just leave a line at the top that says "Part of the May Modathon Month" or alternatively, you can use the May Modathon 2026 tag, and you'll automatically be entered to win!
And don't worry, if you don't know how to mod, you can check out our Let's Mod Morrowind series to learn a lot of the basics! Every mod has a shot at winning, so why not give it a try!
Remember, this competition only applies to mods released in May! So let's all get modding, and give Morrowind the proper 24th anniversary celebration it so rightfully deserves by making it even better than ever with a ton of new content!
Long Live Resdayn and the Morrowind Modding Community!
