“Nyquist’s versatility comes from a life of deep musical immersion: He’s been singing and playing piano for as long as he can remember. His mother, an English professor at the prestigious University of Toronto, encouraged him to take lessons, but he chafed against the structure and theoretical focus.
“School wasn’t for me growing up,” remembers Nyquist, whose most impactful learning took place when visiting the city’s cultural hotspots or spending time within his mom’s circle of artists and academics. After singing in his high school choir and playing trumpet in the school band, he started studying sociology at Toronto’s Ryerson University.
