Morgan Gallo tells the full story of her worst bomb so far: getting booked to open for Smash Mouth at a women’s surf festival in a 6,000 seat outdoor amphitheater. The crowd is there for the Shrek soundtrack, the band is sound checking drums and bass during her set, and a pack of drunk guys start heckling her with “women aren’t funny, take your top off” while no one laughs.
She ends up booed by thousands, crying in a utility closet, and then gets an email from the producer saying he is “very disappointed” in her performance. Morgan breaks down exactly why this gig was doomed from the start, what comics actually need from producers to succeed, and why she now compares it to telling a Zamboni driver to clean a beach. It is brutal, hilarious and painfully relatable for anyone who has ever done a bad show.
