Moldbug's idea of the Cathedral is rooted in James Burnham's idea of the Managerial State: that the society we live in is governed by a decentralized system of managers which isn't accountable to marching orders from any one source. A more conspiratorial angle would be that our society is governed by a small group of elites who don't necessarily have our best interests at heart. However, is this a false dichotomy?
