A slow evocative piece featuring Verbos Complex Oscillator and Harmonic Oscillator, and Mutable Instruments Elements.
PATCH NOTES
============
Tune is overall in pentatonic major, though I suspect I fell out of it when setting up Elements' sequence.
Voices
-----------
ARP VOICE is Verbos Complex Oscillator in sync'd AM mode. AM index modulated by Channel B of Verbos Voltage Multistage (VMS). Timbre modulated by Wogglebug Smooth output. Low/Hi and Even/Odd Harmonics modulated by Channel A of VMS. Out into 6db input of LxD and on to submix in Verbos Scan & Pan followed by 2hp Verb (Verb stereo outs to final Sputnik mixer).
Voice v/oct & gate controlled by Pittsburgh KB-1 in arpeggiator mode.
MELODY VOICE is Verbos Harmonic Oscillator square and harmonic outputs mixed in Quadratt and sent to Ripples. From Ripples into an Erica Pico VCA channel modulated by Pip Slope (env used both for volume and Ripples Frequency). Env decay length controlled by Turing Machine Volts expander. Ripples FM modulated by Wogglebug Woggle out. Output from VCA into Clouds Left channel. Clouds stereo out into final mix of Sputnik 6ch mixer.
Voice v/oct by Turing Machine by way of 2hp Tune. Gate from 2hp Div, by way of Mutable Branches channel #2 in "latch mode" to get long gates and rests. Note that during "interludes", which I had to time just right in order to keep the gate open, I played the Tune Bias knob by hand. Kind of wish I'd incorporated slew limiting to have a more legato feel during the interludes (would also have to incorporate a switch). Next time maybe :-)
"STRINGS/CHORUS" VOICE is Mutable Instruments Elements in "long envelope" mode. Most parameters of Elements are modulated either by Batumi or 2 channels of Sputnik 5-step Voltage Source (LOVE THIS THING).
Voice v/oct by sequences in 2 channels of Sputnik 5-step Voltage Source. Sequences tuned by ear (no quantization). The 2 channels are switched between by Sputnik Selector (switch) with channel changes triggered by 5th gate. Selector set to switch randomly between channels. Sequence advanced by Wogglebug -- 2hp Div -- Branches channel #1 (except in interludes, where stages are "played" by hand).
DRUMS by Peaks. Bass drum triggered on Sputnik 1st gate. Snare/hat triggered by 2nd output of Branches channel #1. Drums sent to S&P/Verb and on to final mix.
Control
------------
I went a little nuts with "controls" in this patch in order to have an easier way to manage the main sections vs the interludes.
In the interludes I wanted a more rubato feel, so I didn't want clock running to certain parts of the patch. Additionally, I wanted Elements' gate to be wide-open the entire time for a sustained "orchestral" feel. I also wanted the 2hp Verb's mix to be a bit wetter. When first working out the performance, I was doing this by hand. Obviously I found it cumbersome! Next step was to involve Frames with a knob-twist to kill the clock and make the Verb wetter.
But how to open Elements' gate during the entire interludes? After puzzling for a while, I finally hit upon a pretty elegant solution -- use a channel of Frames with no input (thus giving a +10v offset), and send that to one input of the 2-way switch in WMD Tool-Box Then, the other input to the switch is the normal gate. But now I need to flip the switch and move Frames' big knob. To achieve this I used 2 of the "voltage memory" pads on the KB-1. The voltage memory output was fed to Frames' Frame input, and I played around with the voltage setting for the pads until the proper frame was selected with each pad. The trigger out of the pads was sent to the switch. Now I could just hit a pad and have things be the way I wanted.
I left the arpeggiator on its own so I could start/stop it at will, but I could have used a similar approach with another sequential switch.
