Oriental Expressions: Patch Notes
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
Still more patching with my smaller, Mutable Instruments-focused case. Wanted to practice using Tides in Parasite’s “Two Drunks” mode.
Involved modules
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Intellijel 1U Random/Clock
4ms Rotating Clock Divider and Breakout
Mutable Instruments (MI) Rings
MI Clouds
MI Rings
MI Veils
MI Tides
MI Elements
2 x MI Peaks
TipTop ONE
Ornament & Crime (O+C)
Intellijel 1U Quadratt
Intellijel 1U Buffered Mult
Intellijel 1U Digitank Reverb
2hp Reverb
2hp 3:1
Transient Modules 6ch Mixer
Pittsburgh Outs
Routing/Control

This was a pretty massive patch and I used all but two of my good-sized collection of Stackcables!
* Intellijel 1U Random/Clock source drives all timing. Rotating Clock Divider is in gate mode.
* Main melodic/chiming/farting line is Rings. Melodic sequencing is nuts: Two Drunks UNI output is attenuated in Quadratt channel 1 and sent to Veils where the Two Drunks voltage is further modulated by Peaks #1 (channel 1) in 4-step sequencer mode on /8, and then fed to O+C in Quadraturia mode on CV1. (All this doesn’t stop me from forcing things where I want them with the Quadratt knob!)
O+C is set to pentatonic minor. Rings Strum is triggered by 2hp 3:1 switching between /1 and /3 gates from RCD. Rings is FM’d to itself, and I’m wiggling the attenuverter for that. Rings’ Brightness, Damping, and Position are modulated by Two Drunks BI output attenuated via Quadratt channel 2. Rings’ Structure is being modulated by Peaks #1 in 4-step sequencer mode on /6, with careful attention to the Structure attenuverter to limit the voltages to “good-sounding” ones.
Rings stereo out to Clouds in looping delay mode. Clouds’ Size and Texture modulated by the Two Drunks BI output (from Quadratt channel 2, above).
The combination of FM and pushing Damping to the max at times results in the awesome “driven” sounds coming out of Rings at times.
* Bass is provided by Elements. It’s just hard-tuned to a good fundamental note and is being gated by the /8 output of the RCD.
* Drums/perc provided by Peaks #2 and TipTop ONE. Bass drum is /4 off RCD and is tuned to a useful note within the scale of the patch. Higher “snymbol” triggered by the 2hp 3:1 module (as is Rings strum as noted above). These are submixed in Quadratt and sent through the Intellijel 1U Digiverb. Drums/bass are further submixed and combined into dual mono channels to go into my 2x3 2M mixer. Pipe-hit/sigh is ONE sample triggered by /8 fed into 2hp Verb with pretty high settings, stereo outs to the 2x3 mixer.
* Ornament & Crime (O+C) in Quantermain simple quantizer mode
Mixing Tricks
- - - - - - - - - -
Elements and Rings are both stereo modules, if you want them to be (I do). Stereo creates some interesting mixing challenges if you don’t have a real stereo/panning mixer.
I don’t have a dedicated stereo panning mixer in this case (I have a nice Sputnik 6ch in my big case). But I *do* have the Transient Modules 2x3 mixer and the Pitts Outs module. I pretend that the individual mixer outputs of the 2x3 are “left” and “right” channels and feed those straight into the Outs’ stereo ins.
Bummer is, if you send a mono signal into a single side/channel of the 2x3 mixer it will come out hard-panned to that channel, with no way to pan it. My trick to convert the 2x3 mixer into a stereo panning mixer is to first send any “single channel mono” signal into a mult and bring two channels out. This makes it a “two channel mono” signal. I then feed the signal into two parallel channels of the mixer as a pair. Then, I can use the individual level controls to pan the mono signal. This is pretty flexible and works fine, but results in a lot of redundant patching and also requires submixing for anything more than a single mono signal. A panning mixer would be more elegant in this case, but I suppose some would argue it would be less “modular”.

About the Ride
Please check out http://gravelmap.com, which is how I discovered the road in this installment. Highly recommended!
Paytons Ridge Road is a gravel road surrounded by woods in Owen County, KY. I found it on gravelmap.com. Its one of the shorter trips from Lexington, so I decided to check it out.
Takeaway: while the wooded gravel road is pleasant (except for some deeper gravel sections), ultimately, Paytons Ridge Road is a disappointment for motorcycling. Along the way there were private and no trespassing signs, but they were facing directly at the road, which I interpret as stay off my property, as opposed to turn back. However, after about a mile I discovered a No Trespassing sign more obviously facing road users, which made me decide to turn around.
