A lot happened on the farm this week! We finally upgraded one of our irrigation pivots with brand-new drops, but that didn't stop me from finding several plugged nozzles that needed cleaning. I also take you along as we monitor fertilizer pumps on our potatoes and spring wheat, check irrigation amounts with rain gauges, and explain how we're trying to increase wheat protein to avoid costly dockage at harvest.
While I was away at a family reunion, the crew kept the farm running by baling first crop hay with our new Phiber Stacker. This was our first time putting it to work, automatically stacking three large square bales at a time. We also show GPS-guided baling, moisture testing hay to make sure it's ready to bale, and a behind-the-scenes look at how the Phiber Stacker works as it builds perfectly stacked groups of bales for easy loading and hauling.
The crew also tackled a major irrigation repair after an underground pivot power wire failed. We tracked down the broken wires, temporarily repaired them, and eventually installed an entirely new underground power line to get the pivot back up and running.
You'll also get an inside look at fertilizer management, potato crop progress, checking irrigation uniformity with rain gauges, and why Idaho farmers don't spray glyphosate (Roundup) on wheat before harvest.
From fixing pivots and unplugging sprinkler nozzles to baling hay with new equipment, monitoring potato and wheat crops, and keeping irrigation running during one of the busiest times of the year, this is another full day of real farming in southeast Idaho.
