What happens when Disney remakes a movie that already worked perfectly the first time? Today I’m reviewing the live-action Moana, and while it is not terrible, it is also nothing special. In this Moana live-action movie review, I break down why this remake is just fine, why it never fully justifies its existence, and why it constantly made me ask one major question: why am I not just watching the original animated movie? The original Moana is vibrant, emotional, colorful, musical, and full of life, and this live-action version follows so much of that same blueprint that it never becomes something truly special on its own.
This is not a disaster. Catherine Lagaʻaia is incredibly charming as Moana, and she is easily one of the best parts of the movie. Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, the songs are familiar, the story is familiar, and there are moments that work. But as a whole, this feels like another example of Disney making live-action remakes we do not really need.
