The beginning of this run was actually made by myself in late March 2020, however because the angle for the first shroom clip was so incredibly bad, by the time early April came, I gave up on this good supergrind setup and went back to Marth and my old one to make the 37.262 flap.
At the beginning of the day today, I decided to look at the bad setup to see if I could get anything new to happen and to my surprise I was able to get the clip to not hit the fountain wall in about 10 minutes. I then continued to optimise the rest of the run, finding the slip chain strat in the process, and got the sub 37.2 that I have wanted to see for a very long time.
Because everything in this run was done by myself, sadly Marth is no longer an author, so I'd like to give special thanks to him for discovering the supergrind in June 2019 and working with me on the original 37.878 run, which started my journey to specialising in them today.

Ive been wanting to make this TAS for several years now. Ever since I joined the TAS community in January 2019, this has been the oldest standing record. Back then, of course, I didnt have my eye on the category, nor did I have the skill to make the TAS. But, by 2020, I was more interested and better equipped to do it. However, I was still under the impression @Jellopuff_TAS intended to finish his own WIP for this (https://youtu.be/W84NLdC5ffM), so never pushed to work on it.
By 2022, it had been long enough. However, each time I gained motivation to work on this, there happened to be some new TASer trying this out expecting it to be a simple task, only to give up upon realising it was not. By the time they gave up, I had lost the motivation, and no TAS was ever made. This happened two or three times, the last of which I still had motivation left when they gave up, and so I got to work.
About a week ago, I finished the DS Delfino Square flap project, so was able to start work on something new. This is, of course, what I worked on. Its safe to say this is one of the most daunting flaps out there, which is why the 2011 record stood as long as it did, and after finishing the run myself, I can understand why (well, I kinda already knew after making the No Turnskip 3laps, but I finally had to TAS the turnskip here).
The lap entry has always been a mystery, since its not clear that everyone understood how Jellopuff got the ejection distance he did. I realised last week that he used one of the tree roots to get a trick boost into the RFH ejection trick, and so was finally able to replicate it.
The turnskip is brutal. It took me about 15 hours over 2 days to get it once, and that once is the one you see in the TAS. I was originally planning on maybe changing the lap entry time to have an optimal net cycle once I completed the run up to that point, but after having that much trouble with the turnskip I just left it as it was and moved on. My respects towards @l4m3join01 have risen very high knowing he did this back in 2018 without TAS code, and then another 3 or 4 times with, all in a matter of weeks.
As for the music choice... Forest Maze has always been the tradition for MT flaps ever since @Malleos 2013 ultra flap (https://youtu.be/iyHZt499_q4), and this specific rendition of the song was used in the 2018 ultra flap (https://youtu.be/XTzsIYwlsLs), Jellopuffs first TAS WR. Seeing as Jellopuffs short video is the reason I always had an interest in this category, I thought it would be kinda fitting to reuse that remix in this video as well.

History of the lap 1:
The work for the video youre watching started very shortly after I uploaded my previous lap on this track and shortly before Marth uploaded his Crystal Plains lap (10 months ago). We worked on the first 20 or so seconds for about a month (from the start of September to the start of October) before other things (specifically, the rPB No Glitch 3lap) became more important, and the project died.
I revisited this in February, and worked on it myself for about a week, making a preliminary lap 1 and then getting it down from a 43.634 to a 43.393. I looked at it again twice in April, getting it down to a 43.381 and then a 43.355. I then came back 3 days ago to finally finish the run, getting it to a 43.323 three days ago, a 43.303 two days ago, and a 43.298 yesterday - which is the final time of the lap 1. I should note that a 43.297 is technically possible to get, its just the alignment into the next lap is not sufficient to keep it as an improvement.
Improvements/new strats (basically everything lol):
- Setup for the first boost panel
- Slip drift + offroad strat
- New first beam section multi tricks (with wheelie triggers)
- Improved wheelie triggers on cheese blocks
- New complex cheese block movement (hop trigger, low hop+wheelie off block)
- New complex shroomspot movement (multiple redrifts and rewheelies)
- Improved first long turn line
- Lower trick at end of long turn
- Wheelie trigger on boost ramp
- Improved second beam multi trick multi tricks (with RFH and wheelie triggers)
- Lower next boost ramp trick
- Spin drift STA on the hop trigger
- New miniturbo charge spot on second long turn
- Improved second long turn line using optimal wheelie turning strats
- New pseudo single miniturbo during boost
- More optimised miniturbo charge before last ramp
- RSTA instead of STA on the last ramp
- More optimised miniturbo charge on last turn (with lap 2 setup, including optimal wheelie turns)

Before talking about the TAS itself, I need to address the elephant in the room. Im using Spear. But wait, thats not right, this ultra requires fast wheelie glitch! Apparently not? At the moment, nobody really understands why this works. Add it to the long list of not fully understood OOB bypasses.
After finishing my Airship Fortress flap TAS two days ago, I was watching the original ultra shortcut showcase and saw the Wolf Castlegrounds ultra at the end of the video, which intrigued me. I decided to make a Shooting Star test run the morning after I uploaded the Airship Fortress video, and got an 11.683.
I then had an idea to use an uphill supergrind to make the ultra viable with an inside drifting bike, but tested spear for its high speed. This didnt work out, and I wasnt surprised, but tried to use a mushroom to see if it would work anyway. I failed pretty miserably but was met with my second ever major accidental discovery. I got the fast OOB bypass with Spear.
As you can probably see, I dont actually use any sideways momentum from the SG ejection, so the bypass seems to be purely thanks to the spin drift. This exact bypass is the one used in the video since I havent been able to recreate it with Spear or any other inside drifting bike since. Because I was unable to recreate it, I unnecessarily use a mushroom and a RFH ejection before the bypass.
Theres not much to talk about within the lap aside from the post-respawn section:
- Its non-sloped ground, so tilting forwards is better for the respawn drop
- cfs wiggle strat is used to accelerate faster during the respawn boost
- A slight left-facing angle is taken in order to maximise the forward speed during the drift trick to the right
- The bounce upon landing from the trick loses only one to two tenths of a millisecond with the benefit of saving about 3 to 4 full milliseconds from a better angle into the finish line
Aside from all the setup before the lap, this was actually a very simple TAS to make. The respawn is framelocked so the very short first half was done in a few hours; and the second half is almost a straight line so was also done in a few hours. Overall, the TAS was finished in a single day. Look forward to the final TAS comp result video of the year coming early next week!
