MKWii TAS Competition 2023 - Task 16:
On any THREE Nintendo tracks*, using ANY character or vehicle, and a maximum of THREE mushrooms each, reach Y=0 as fast as possible.
- You may NOT get counted OOB before reaching Y=0**
- Timing for every run starts when the race begins and ends on the frame you reach Y=0 on infodisplay
- Placing is determined by the combined time of the three runs in your submission
This is an optional collab task, so you may collaborate with one other person.
Clarifications:
*You may use different combos on each of your individual runs
**Reaching Y=0 itself counts you OOB, so don't stress when that happens

This track was created by JDS for Custom Track Jam #25. The track has not been officially released so there is no tockdom page for it.
Ive wanted to make a TAS of this track since I hosted the CT Jam that featured it. I made short LOTAD laps for each entry when working with Yoshii to make the result video, and found the slippery aspect of this one a really cool challenge to try out in the future. A few months later, in September, I decided to download the track and start making a TAS of it. I actually started off using Funky Kong Spear (my mind was in rSL glitch mindset not rSL no glitch mindset), then switched to test Dry Bowser Spear, before realising my mistake, and switching straight to Toadette Magikruiser. Ive TASed this off and on since, over the past 5 months, have made it into lap 3 and restarted lap 1 multiple times, and finished (for real) yesterday. A lot of the points in this TAS have moments where I do something slightly suboptimal or unusual - this is due to QM on the ramp and at the supegrind ejection (mostly the latter) preventing timesaves that arent full amounts of frames.
At some point near the beginning of the project, I realised you could start a supergrind, but couldnt get it to save time until I figured out a good place to eject from it without losing time on the recovery. I ended up settling on releasing it about 5 or 6 seconds earlier than the endpoint (where you would hit a wall and/or lose all your speed) for the maximum timesave. The supergrind ended up saving well over a second per lap. Also, it may look like Im tricking quite high on the ramp, but since it gives a full mushroom boost, I want to stay in the air until I reach the point where Ive spaced out the boost enough to maximise both of them (ramp & trick). This is by far the shortest 3lap I ever have, and likely ever will make. Im unsure as to whether this will become 5 laps, or whether the surface of the cave will change (potentially preventing the supergrind) in the future, but for now this is where the track is, and you all get to enjoy it while it is like this.
Lastly, after having found 6 supergrind strats (MC for flap, DKS potentially for flap, rDKJP for 3lap/flap, MMM for 3lap viability, rMR 2nd one for 3lap/flap, rBC shroomless one for last lap of 3lap) all on Nintendo tracks, Ive wanted to find a supergrind on a custom track, so this is a really cool thing to have done.

a 200cc TAS??? yep. if this was completely optimised it could probably go down to 1:40, and if there are better strats then maybe 1:39 but this is pretty solid considering I spent only 2 nights on it.
You may be wondering... why do I use a shroom at the end instead of the beginning? Well, the answer is, its faster. In order to do the end cut shroomless you have to do it with a trick boost (which you can get by doing a high trick off the big ramp). In RTA, you cant do that low a trick off the big ramp because you cant do RFH, however in TAS, you can do RFH meaning the big ramp is much lower and the trick boost ends before you reach the end sc, which is where you use a shroom. Now surely its a waste of a mushroom? Well, I tested both strategies and it looks like the time saved from the grass cut at the beginning of the lap is completely negated by the time lost from the high trick on the big ramp. In fact, the first lap was 0.5 seconds slower using it, meaning the high trick lost around 1.5 seconds alone.

Why did I make this TAS? Well, I wanted to try out 200cc, and I saw someone recommend this category so tried it out. Yes, the 150cc TAS on rBC is still going, however were still stuck working on the glitch lap 2 so it will be a while before any big progress is made.

This run was actually made on the 6th of January 2021, 2 days after making the 1:28 3lap. The beginning of the lap is copied from the old NG 3lap WIP (which has since been improved before the first escalator due to a new strat there). The biggest difference (other than using flame runner) from the old lap 1 is the trick off the banister while OOB, which had long been thought to have been faster until Wade suggested I try it, and I eventually got it to work after serious doubts. I made a 1 or 2 frame improvement the day after making this lap, but was never able to carry it, even with the help of multiple other TASers, so we (and I) lost motivation and it was never completed.
The route of going from in bounds to out of bounds on laps 1 and 3, and from out of bounds to in bounds on lap 2 will be obsoleted by the new shortcut discovered by dm248 and Ancient, found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkh1CohKAuY

Recently, Ive been having a bit of fun going through all the tracks and seeing what TASing potential various Nintendo tracks have on 200cc. For pretty much all of them, Ive been putting in very little effort to properly optimise the runs, since theyre just usually for strat demonstration.
However, for this category in particular, there were two potential routes that I found were very close in time to each other (those being 0-1-2 and 0-0-3 shroomstrats), and realised Id need to put some effort into both to make a fair comparison between the two. If youve been keeping up with the uploads on my second channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGPuKK14yEQrqkkXV2NmYbA) then youll already know that 0-1-2 came out to be 0.1 slower (if you havent been or didnt know then you should subscribe so that you are able to and do know :p).

Finally starting to finish some of the stuff I worked on over the winter.
Improvements from my lap 1 TAS from 2020:
- Overall better optimisation, as well as full input range
- Improved start slide
- New slip drift strat approaching shroomless cut
- New shroomless cut landing strat
- Much later rehop on long straight
- Double MT on uphill turn
- Double trick entering trick section
- New trick section strats
- Much higher bounce (and as a result, later and better shroom)
- New rehop strat + sticky road eject for mini offroad cut at lap entry
During the process of working on this lap, I actually performed the bounce before the shroomspot so well that I cleared the entire first dirt cut shroomless. This opened up the possibility of using the shroom elsewhere, which I will be demonstrating in a future lap 1 later on. I still wanted to finish this lap however, as Id already found so many new strats. This lap time would give a 1:55 in a full 3lap run, which is about a 4 second improvement over the time I achieved in 2019, and about a 9 second improvement over the current RTA WR.
