MKWii TAS Competition 2023 - Task 9:
On Christmas Wish, using ANY character on an outside drifting bike, and a maximum of THREE mushrooms, complete lap TWO as fast as possible.
- You MUST abide by no-glitch category rules*
This is a solo task, so you may NOT collaborate with anyone else.
This is a speed task, so you have 4 hours** to make your submission.
Clarifications:
*You may not perform an ultra shortcut, wallclips, a delayed lap count, horizontal wall glitch, slow wheelie glitch, fast wheelie glitch, supergrinding, superhopping, or supersliding. You also may not enter the lap out-of-bounds.
**You have an entire week to complete the task, but it remains private until you request it in DMs with the bot. Once you request it, you have 4 hours to submit as many runs as you need.

Recently, Ive been having a bit of fun going through all the tracks and seeing what TASing potential various Nintendo tracks have on 200cc. For pretty much all of them, Ive been putting in very little effort to properly optimise the runs, since theyre just usually for strat demonstration.
However, for this category in particular, there were two potential routes that I found were very close in time to each other (those being 0-1-2 and 0-0-3 shroomstrats), and realised Id need to put some effort into both to make a fair comparison between the two. If youve been keeping up with the uploads on my second channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGPuKK14yEQrqkkXV2NmYbA) then youll already know that 0-1-2 came out to be 0.1 slower (if you havent been or didnt know then you should subscribe so that you are able to and do know :p).

Finally starting to finish some of the stuff I worked on over the winter.
Improvements from my lap 1 TAS from 2020:
- Overall better optimisation, as well as full input range
- Improved start slide
- New slip drift strat approaching shroomless cut
- New shroomless cut landing strat
- Much later rehop on long straight
- Double MT on uphill turn
- Double trick entering trick section
- New trick section strats
- Much higher bounce (and as a result, later and better shroom)
- New rehop strat + sticky road eject for mini offroad cut at lap entry
During the process of working on this lap, I actually performed the bounce before the shroomspot so well that I cleared the entire first dirt cut shroomless. This opened up the possibility of using the shroom elsewhere, which I will be demonstrating in a future lap 1 later on. I still wanted to finish this lap however, as Id already found so many new strats. This lap time would give a 1:55 in a full 3lap run, which is about a 4 second improvement over the time I achieved in 2019, and about a 9 second improvement over the current RTA WR.

Started on this at the end of August 2021. Worked on lap 1 on and off for a week or so, then worked on Sagittarius Circuit for a bit before returning to finish it, getting this time later in September. By October, I made a LOTAD of the ultra lap 2 and shroomless lap 3, to get a time of 1:51.703 (https://youtu.be/nM6FgHH8LYU) I came back to it in January 2022 to work on lap 2, but lost motivation, and never worked any further. Because of the precision and difficulty of the ultra, not to mention the fact superhopping would now be faster, I have no plans to finish this (and before you ask, I never had plans to make a 3lap no glitch TAS).
Why am I uploading it this far in the future? Well, Ive finally remembered, wanted to, had time, and had motivation all at the same time. That is often the case for every TAS. So, if you ever ask why isnt [some TAS] finished yet?, give them a break, theyre trying their best. Were not machines.

What? Why are you looking at me funny? I did exactly what it says in the title.
Oh.
So, Aylx made a joke submission in Task 6 of TAS comp last year, in which he completed an almost all trees lap. The rules weve made up are that you have to touch all trees and complete lap 1, using all your mushrooms. I kinda joked once in a VC that Id make an actual TAS of this joke, but then seriously considered it, and did it back in late February.
I probably could have uploaded this on April Fools Day, but forgot it existed, and now kinda regret not doing so, because it was my first April Fools Day not uploading anything since 2019, but hey, at least more people get to see it now, since apparently YouTube likes the new TAS awards video (if you havent watched it, you should, its really cool).
Anyway, seeing as this is a joke category, there is not much optimisation done here. The first 20-25 seconds are decent, and then it just falls apart in the second half, because tree QM sucks and I couldnt care less about optimising any further.
If youre wondering why some of the tree hits dont generate any bonk effects (sound or visual), its because effects run on some sort of cooldown that resets every half second or so (this is why MG ultra has periodic bonks instead of it being constant), and I hit multiple trees before this can happen.

This is a tool-assisted speedrun (TAS). Played on SwareJonges Dolphin 5.0 LUA Core v3.3 and 3.5. Tools used: slow-down, savestates, frame advance, TAS input, TAS code, RAM watch (info display), LUA scripts, text files, and LuigiMs TAS toolkit.

Please note we lost a lot of time in order to set up the line into lap 2. If we had continued normally the lap time would have been 50.465. The end of this lap may change for a more favourable angle into the barrel roll setup. Take that as you will.
Because the barrel roll strat is only possible with spear and is possible with 2 mushrooms without losing essentially any time, Spear 1-2-0 is the fastest route.
About the run, I cant say how happy I am that Ive been a part of something this good. This is the most Ive ever been able to optimise a Mario Kart Wii TAS and I wouldnt have been able to do it without any of the people that have helped so far. So thanks to each and every one of you... Im glad to FINALLY finish this after 17 months of it needing to be a reality.
Most of these strats are similar to the two Spear runs I uploaded earlier this month, however the big difference is the very beginning. The supergrind was discovered by Jellopuff in June this year, and managed to save 0.2 alone.
The rest of the timesave comes from better lines and/or further optimisations (such as the stick on the second bridge, and the new double hop+instant wheelie on the staircase instead of drift stick + hop wheelie). I found most of these strats myself through testing, however Malleo and Marth came up with some minor additions to certain sections that saved little extra bits of time.
Im hoping the 3lap will be finished next month, however dont expect it too soon.
