On September 12, ARCA attempted to perform Mission 12 and Mission 16 drop tests.
During these tests it was intended to lift the 1:6 AMi Cargo capsule and a Reentry Target Vehicle (RTV), with a ballon, and then drop them, to determine de vehicles stability at terminal velocity. Due to stronger wind than expected the flights were postponed for a later date.
The AMi capsule is designed to return precious metals like platinum, rhodium, gold from the asteroids and it doesn’t have a recovery parachute, ARCA opting instead for a high lift heat shield and a crash landing with a velocity of around 140km/h.
During Mission 12, the capsule will be lifted with a manned balloon and dropped to reach the equilibrium and terminal velocities and then the impact, similar with an asteroid return mission.
The team will test the capsule’s terminal stability and the structural integrity at impact, and it will validate via test the values for the equilibrium and terminal velocities.
The Reentry Target Vehicle (RTV), a commercial military product used to simulate both nuclear and conventional ballistic missiles warheads will perform a first flight during Mission 16. During the first test flight we will determine the stability of the vehicle near the terminal velocity of Mach 0.6. Mission 16 will be executed in the next days function of weather.
