Miss Indian World is the most prestigious Indigenous pageant in North America, where young women are judged on categories ranging from traditional dance and talent to public speaking and tribal knowledge. The winner spends the next year as a Native ambassador, traveling across the continent and around the world to meet with tribal communities. Lillian Sparks Robinson won the pageant in 2000, and using what she learned during her reign, went on to serve as the Commissioner for the Administration for Native Americans under President Obama. She came to StoryCorps with her mom, Georgeline Sparks, to remember winning the competition.
