I don't have a lot of expectations on Marvel's latest Spider-Man film Brand New Day. More like Used Like New Day, right? I expected this film to be an adequate and satisfactory MCU slop that most people would forget about because that's how I felt with Fantastic Four First Steps. It's an okay movie. It's adequate enough. It's just really forgettable and uninteresting. Spider-Man Brand New Day is not adequate and fine. This film is miserable.
"Misery. Misery. Misery. That's what you've chosen."
It's sad. It's depressing. It's pathetic. It's filled with guilt, self-pity, regret, and I came out of the film feeling sad and wanting to put Spider-Man Brand New Day as my favorite MCU Spider-Man film. No, seriously. I really like this film, even if it successfully conveys the feeling of misery and depression.
This is a rare MCU film that I go to the theaters for where the theater is mostly dead silent. There aren't a lot of laughs and wits on the film, but that's actually a good thing. It takes itself fairly seriously and treats the depressing and miserable story with proper respect. Peter Parker drowns himself in agony ever since the events of No Way Home making the big sacrifice to save the universe, an event that he constantly blamed himself for, and rightfully so because that whole movie is entirely your fault. You caused all that, Peter. The whole multiverse wouldn't have been in chaos if you and the freaking wizard who should've known better stopped messing with people's minds. Oh, sorry. Master of the Mystic Arts.
Even putting aside all that misery and self-loathing, this is a surprisingly fantastic film that is brilliantly directed, filled with really tight action sequences and storylines that mesh very well. I do find it really weird that there are two films from the MCU involving crazy redhead Marvel heroes turned into villains. I won't spoil anything, but I really have no idea where this redhead bias comes from. Stay away from Claire, Marvel, or I will personally make your whole lives miserable.
Spider-Man Brand New Day achieves some incredible feats of being the first MCU film in years that actually evoke real emotions out of me. That's an achievement that should be celebrated considering the many mediocre and unimpressive releases as of late. Okay, Thunderbolts is pretty good, and while Brand New Day successfully conveys sadness, depression, and misery, I like it for that. Peter Parker being miserable and depressed is exactly the kind of figurative emo Spider-Man fix that I need, but is a good Spider-Man film enough to save the absolute mess that is the MCU right now? I don't think so.
