📖Cognitive exaptation, as discussed in the context of John Vervaeke's 'Awakening from the Meaning Crisis', refers to the process where cognitive skills developed for practical purposes are repurposed or adapted for more abstract, higher-order thinking. An example provided in the series involves the development of numeracy and abstract symbolic thinking, initially trained for practical reasons like handling money, which becomes ready for exaptation. Alphabetic literacy, another example, trains the mind in second-order thinking, which is also poised for exaptation.
The term “Exaptation” is a concept in evolutionary biology. It refers to a trait that has been co-opted for a use other than the one for which natural selection has built it. This process describes how a feature acquires a function that was not acquired through natural selection.
For example, feathers might have originally evolved for temperature regulation, but were later co-opted for flight. In this case, the feathers would be an exaptation because they were not originally “designed” for flight but were later used for this purpose. This concept helps explain how complex structures can evolve incrementally over time.
