I love the finished look of a tubular cast-on! In this video, I show one of my favorites worked in the round for a hat, starting at a provisional cast-on with waste yarn.
Half the required number of stitches is cast on provisionally in smooth cotton waste yarn by crochet chaining onto a knitting needle. On the first round using working yarn, the number stitches is doubled. Two additional set-up rounds are worked, then one round of k1, p1 ribbing. The waste yarn provisional cast-on is then removed to reveal a beautiful finished tubular edge!
Notes:
Use a smooth cotton waste yarn.
When stitches are slipped, slip them purlwise (inserting needle as if to purl) so that the stitch's orientation on the needle does not change (i.e. right leg in front, left leg in back).
