Two researchers from Alibaba Cloud did just that—and discovered that the chat messages were actually code sent by hackers trying to gain full access to the hosts’ and unsuspecting users' computers.
This allowed hackers to do everything from stealing files to mining bitcoin to installing spyware, to even using the infected computer to attack other devices.
The researchers quickly reported the issue, and it was immediately patched. But by then, it was far too late. The exploit was already viral, and attackers flooded Minecraft servers to take advantage of the bug before the world had a chance to update its software.
