Normal base defenses in minecraft are really not all that good. Setup some observer powered arrow shooting dispensers and the player can just walk to the side as they only ever shoot forward. What if the arrows could follow the player? What if those arrows could be Power V? What if those arrows were on Fire? What if those arrows came at the player faster than an observer clock could shoot, and never ran out of ammo? Now we are talking about this Laser Defense which uses NO mods/plugins and is 100% vanilla game play. No base defense is perfect, but this is a lot better than what you normally have.
