This video shows an example of the work of the Greek artist Petros Vrellis. He combines a background in engineering and also in art to create extraordinary artworks like this one.
This particular example consists of three sheets of acetate, each sheet appears to have a random colour pattern printed on it. Place the three sheets carefully on top of each other, using the registration pins, and a photographic image of a middle aged woman appears, as if from nowhere.
Petros explains that "this artwork is the result of a four-year exploration into colour blending. The core principle is as simple as combining colours (e.g., red + blue = purple). This basic principle is heavily manipulated using computational power to produce the effect. This was a complex task, and currently, the code exceeds 5,000 lines. After completing the project, commenters pointed out that it falls into the scientific field of Visual Cryptography. Upon researching this topic, I discovered that this is the most advanced -public- use of visual cryptography (to my knowledge) and the first case of artistic expression in this exotic medium. However, lots of people have underestimated the work needed to make this piece and commented that it is simple photoshopping or an effortless product of AI. This was certainly not the case."
Clearly the final image has been distributed between the three sheets of acetate. But if you then rotate the three sheets (one by 180 degrees, the other two by 90 degrees but in opposite directions) and then again place them on top of each other, a completely different image appears, this time a photographic image of a young woman. So there are two completely different images contained within the three acetate sheets!
