Video by Danny Wild, Restless Studio.
Early in 2018, the world was introduced to Mildlife through their debut album Phase. Few first releases amass praise from Mojo, The Guardian, BBC 6 Music, The Express, and Shindig, then go on to be celebrated by DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, Worldwide FM, Dummy and Indie Shuffle. But it’s precisely this eclectic mix of genres, tastes, and influences that brought Mildlife together, and what they committed to reflecting in their sound. After a surreal start to 2018, the four-piece completed a sold-out national tour of Australia, and recently announced plans to cross the oceans for their debut Europe and UK tours.
With the release of their debut imminent, Mildlife took retreat at Research Records HQ in Melbourne, staying overnight after recording each morning and afternoon. It resulted in the evolution of the title track, newly imagined and re-contextualised at increased tempo with swathes of improvisation throughout. The studio recording was the culmination of the song’s growth in a live setting, evolving on club stages and at festivals throughout 2017.
Mildlife’s knack for locked-in grooves and celestial tones features heavily across ‘Phase II’, a more than 11-minute sonic journey. Kevin McDowell's synth soars while Adam Halliwell’s growing prowess as a flautist is peppered over James Donald’s shimmering percussion. Shortly after, Tom Shanahan's phased bass appears, and the four lock into a groove that gives a subtle nod to 1960s Krautrock band, Can. It’s not long before ‘Phase II’ erupts into a cosmic jazz-funk that urges you to move. It sucks you in, free of worry and consequence; utterly otherworldly. It’s no surprise that the band has been described as “kaleidoscopic”, “irresistible” and “enchanting”. With Mildlife, you’ll always leave wanting more.

About This Release:
Big Yawn - NGB
Research Records welcomes back Melbourne quartet Big Yawn for their fourth full-length offering, NGBE.
Big Yawns ability to blend complex rhythm sections with infectious basslines, deep synth work, and tongue-in-cheek sampling remains ever-present, and perhaps is the most advanced weve heard yet.
Sitting in a world of its own, the album—named after the groups beloved and lost warehouse space, National Gallery of Brunswick East (where most of the material was recorded)—features a wide array of soundscapes spanning mutated drum n bass, low-key grime, rap, and dub-wise antics, all laced with a heavy dose of FX.
Equal parts deep and menacing, the nine tracks encapsulate Big Yawns evolution in the studio and on stage, most notably through their collaboration 2Stroke with Melbourne-based future rap prodigy Teether and brought to life visually with album artwork by Julian Hocking. Title: Ragazzo
Artist: Big Yawn
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RREP09
Formats: 12 Vinyl/Digital
Digital Release: 29th October 2021
Physical Release: 29th October 2021
About This Release:
Big Yawn make experimental electronic music by fusing a wash of sweeping synthesizers, heavily refracted vocal sampling, motorik style percussion and disorientating dub FX.
Their latest studio release Pressure Acts creates a space where breaks compete with live drums compete with drones. Relentless pummelling bass lines and kinetic dub FX come standard.
Big Yawns energetic and unrelenting live performances create a definitive impression on this release. The sonic textures in the record are lush, stoned, frenetic and fun. The music is sinister yet also tongue-in-cheek — Phil Collins and Slipknot may have even been sampled.
The first single Ragazzo is ideal for joy rides in HSVs and/or flaunting at the local disco parlor - a dank blend of YMO style pop hooks, driving bass, delicate synths, and a robotic pulse. Big Yawn - Ragazzo [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/tUEWiCuyLpM/mqdefault.jpg)

Artist: Swazi Gold

Cat#: RESEARCHEP03
Formats: Digital
Digital Release: 7th December 2018
About This Release:
Formed by the chief songwriters from Melbourne bands Crepes, Dreamin Wild and Sagamore, Swazi Gold brings old friends together. Chris Jennings and Sam Cooper grew up in the Victorian coastal towns of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, while TimKarmouchewas an inland man, hailing from Ballarat in the state’s north-west.
It’s this togetherness that’s at the heart of Swazi Gold’s debut album,Jehovah’s Whispers. There are six songs, two created by each member; through true collaboration and participation. Nothin’ but a democracy here.
Jehovah’s Whisperswas recorded in a single weekend in 2017 at the Cooper’s family home in Ocean Grove, and captures the deep friendship between the three members.
The first single from the album is “Disco”, written by Jennings. He says the song is about, “moving to Melbourne and seeing how we’ve all changed. We’ve all come from these bands that were heavily influenced by the coast and were our hometowns. They’ve changed a lot. We’ve kind of stopped being from the coast,” he says.
Driven by a sassy disco beat, the song name-checks towns dotted along Victoria’s western coastline. These places, like Leopold, Portarlington, Bellbrae and Torquay, are the former homes of Swazi Gold. The final places, and indeed the final words uttered in the song, are better known international hubs—like Barcelona, London and Berlin—suggesting the mainstreaming of worlds in moving to the big smoke.
On “Disco” andJehovah’s Whispers,Swazi Gold draw on their collective love of African music, American funk, and quirky, melody-driven pop music to explore the spaces between conventional genres.
Lyrically, the remaining five songs address a range of themes, from the realisation of personal limitations to seeing a thriving country town fade to nothingness. There’s also a brooding one in there for anyone who’s ever been ripped off.
Jehovah’s Whispersproves the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And in amidst the love and equality, Swazi Gold’s debut album still packs a punch. Swazi Gold - Disco](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ue4kCLsyKEo/mqdefault.jpg)

Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital

Physical Release: 26th May 2023
About This Release:
Mouche (real name Tim Karmouche) returns to Australian label Research Records with another full-length of imaginary soundtracks, instrumentals and sun-kissed digital jazz. Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild, Tims first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.
Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it. Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 4th December 2020
Physical Release: 11th December 2020
About This Release:
Research Records continue their voyage into Elite Beats extraordinary back catalogue with their second compilation Selected Rhythms Vol. 2. The chosen tracks are lifted from the Portland collectives three-part cassette series Casual Rhythms; a treasure chest of meditative and genre-defying instrumentals where percussion and dub accents prevail.
Elite Beats approach to producing music is their routine for respite. The band reflects when they come together weekly, its an opportunity to put down their other projects, ambitions, work and life stresses for a few hours and just be. This spirit flows into their free-form expression, absorbing both the band and the listener. Additionally,Elite Beatreveals the foundation of their output lies in the discipline of being able to sustain vibration through repetition. Theres a constant coiling mantra throughout each track, the band commenting while many musicians can get totally bored playing the same thing over and over, we love it!
The mixing process swings between embracing the warmth of live recordings and generating noise with analog manipulation. The band experiments with their recorded sound expressing we are less concerned with sounding like 90% of recorded music out there and more concerned with trying shit out.Elite Beatalso cite dub music and its process of recording as an inspiration and how this approach lends itself to a deep listening experience, a notion the band channels artfully.
Remastered for the first time on vinyl, Selected Rhythms Vol. 2 adds to the immersive and interstellar tapestry of Elite Beat. The compilation delves deep into the healing and hypnosis that characterises the collective. For those who were inevitably left looking for more with Selected Rhythms Vol. 1, heres a no-brainer. Album: Bobby Business [ALBUM]

Artist: E. Bobby G.
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH16
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 29th November 2024
Physical Release: 29th November 2024
About This Release:
Research Records teams up with organist and synthesist E. Bobby G. to release his sophomore album, Bobby Business. Once again, the album is primarily centered around the 1982 Kawai DX900, but it masterfully explores more genres than his debut, Giving You M.O.R.E.
Bobby Business was recorded in 2022 after E. Bobby G. received an eviction notice from his beloved sharehouse of 12 years. After moving out, he stored the organ at his workplace, Bakehouse Studios, where his boss let him use the space overnight to record until the early hours. The remainder of the album was recorded in his old studio space, NGBE.
The first track, Ha-Ha, is as meditative as it is glittery, with floating sustained chords. Big Boy and Disco Shift bring back a slightly more polished E. Bobby G. sound—lo-fi library music with bright tones that will appeal to fans of proto-electronic icons like Brian Bennett. Tracks like Lucky Strike and Tropical Dino Ride are video game music dreams, featuring West Coast lead lines and strutting percussion. The second half of the album explores spaced-out 90s downtempo and dub elements, with a distinctive refinement that hides the fact it was created primarily using the Kawai DX900.
Bobby Business closes with Lillian, a sonic dedication to the artists Grandmother, with a more traditional song structure that hints at what Bobby has planned next. E. Bobby G. - Home Entertainment [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/yxWjA_giTYM/mqdefault.jpg)
