What started as shortness of breath and a chronic cough culminated in a second chance at life when Kansas City resident Mike Gallagher became the 2,000th lung transplant at the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Transplant Center, a milestone achieved by only three other centers nationwide.
After receiving a diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis and told he was on death's door, he received the lung transplant he needed to survive on January 10, 2023. Since then, he and his wife have settled into the Mid-America Transplant Family House while he recovers and adapts to post-transplant life.
Thanks to the generosity of an organ donor, Mike looks forward to new opportunities and doing what every parent dreams of, watching his daughters live their lives to the fullest.
