Aran Ryan in this game has a couple of unique qualities to him. Aran takes barely any damage from all of your normal punches, so hes hyper resistant to everything aside from Supers. To illustrate this, all of your normals (left/right jab and left/right body blow) all do only a measly 2 damage each, with Arans full health bar being 80HP total. Compare that to Gabby Jay, where left jab deals 4 damage, right jab deals 5 damage, left gut does 3 damage, and right gut deals 4 damage. Effectively, your damage output on average is cut *in half* compared to Gabby.
However, if you throw a low super at Gabby, it deals 10 damage, and an uppercut landed on Gabby deals 17 damage, which is pretty solid damage. If you land a low super on Aran, it deals *20* damage, and an uppercut deals *23* damage, which is a *massive* increase in damage output, even compared to the weakest boxer in the game!
This fight is designed this way in order to make sure that youre skillful enough to maintain and effectively use your super meter to the fullest. If you are having trouble doing that in general, then youre going to be stuck on this fight until you pass that skill check and are reasonably capable of putting up a good offense with those supers.
Despite Arans ridiculous defense against normal punches, he ends up being a really simple and straightforward fight to get the record on, with barely any randomness, and only really 2 things that you need to time perfectly in order to master this strategy.
Start the fight by holding Up for the first frame of the fight, and then letting go and pressing Y to do a left handed gut punch. From here, buffer another left gut punch, then buffer a right jab into a left jab. Aran will then leap to the left side of the ring, and youll need to time a left jab as quickly as you possibly can. I try to time this jab around when I see the start of Arans leap animation. The dizzy meter is somewhat tight, with you needing to hit this jab within a 4 frame window in order for Aran to successfully go into dizzy status.
Once you land that timed jab, then buffer 2 more left gut punches to send Aran reeling to the side. If youre wanting to do this for a full game run, then I would recommend buffering quick duck into a left gut punch, into a left jab, into a low super. This wastes 1 frame compared to the optimal knockdown, which uses that same technique I mentioned on Mr. Sandman to burn frames in the previous phase. This is because Aran has a similar thing as the Bald Bull IL where he can randomly dodge supers if a one is thrown while hes idle.
Burning that single frame during the dizzy prevents him from dodging your low super at the start of phase 2 when its buffered. If you are specifically going for the world record though and need that single frame, then the buffer strategy you want to do would be a left gut punch, into a right gut punch, into a low super to knock him down. I also use low supers for the knockdowns, since low super happens to be a whopping 84 frames faster than knocking Aran down with an uppercut.
Once Aran gets up, just hold A to buffer a low super to come out on the first frame. If you did the safe buffer in phase 1, youll still have lost that frame, but the super will land 100% of the time. If you went for the buffer thats 1 frame faster, Aran can dodge this roughly 50% of the time. Once the super lands, you can do one of two buffers here depending on what your goals are, because Aran will reel backward and attempt to grab you, but can do 2 different delays before actually committing to it.
If you want to just finish a fight for a full game run, then just do 2 tap ducks (press Down and then let go immediately as soon as you see your character start to duck), then do a quick duck by pressing Down and immediately cancelling it by throwing a low super with the A button. This will net you a time in the 8.7X range typically, and accounts for all types of delays Aran can throw out with his grab.
If you are specifically going for the record on Aran, then the buffer you want to do here is a left jab into a quick duck thats cancelled with a low super. This will ensure that you hit Aran with your low super on the first possible frame if he throws out the fastest delay. If he doesnt, then the fight ends up being a reset.

For being the second fight in this game, Bear Hugger is a surprisingly complicated and challenging character to do an optimized fight on. His main mechanic that he forces players to learn is that ducking may be necessary for victory. This is because unlike Gabby, you cannot damage Bear Hugger with punches to the gut. If you try to punch his gut, the fight just freezes as Bear Hugger just does a raspberry at you and receives zero damage. This leaves you to try punching him the face, to which hell retaliate with a bear hug that you cannot dodge from the left or right, but you can duck it.
However, Bear will also taunt at you periodically, and during this very brief taunt, you can actually punch him in the stomach! It will deal zero damage, but it will still add to your dizzy meter. If you dont know what that is, the dizzy meter is a mechanic that exists for every fight in this game. It is basically a hidden value in the games memory that will get a weighted value added to it for every punch you successfully land; the stronger the punch, the higher the number is that gets added to the meter.
When the meter reaches a certain high number, then the opponent will be forced into a dizzy state where a well timed punch will instantly knock them down! However, the challenging part of this mechanic is that this value will go down by 1 point per frame, which means in order for you to get them dizzy, you need to have a lot of punches dealt in a very short amount of time.
There exists an easier strategy to build up arrows fast by provoking a bear hug from him at the start of the fight, but for this fight, theres an even faster, far more difficult way to achieve a dizzy, and thats with the TAS strategy.
For the start of this fight, you do not want to do a guard manipulated jab, since they dont work here. Instead, youll be waiting for Bear to do his first taunt. When hes idle, his feet will be shuffling in and out, and if youre playing on a CRT with original hardware, you want to throw a left gut punch very slightly after you see his feet go out (if you are playing on anything with input lag, punch as SOON as you see his feet go out).
From here, buffer a left jab, and immediately hold Down until you see your character start to duck, then let go of Down and wait until he centers himself naturally. From here, buffer *another* down input, but this time as soon as you see him start to duck, IMMEDIATELY hold up and right jab. This is a buffer for a frame perfect punch that Akiteru found that will hit Bear on the very last frame of his stun animation. In this game, if you punch anyone on the final frame of their stun animation, then for whatever reason, the game will reward you with a couple of extra arrows in your super meter, as well as make their recoil animation way faster than normal.
From here, you just wait for his next taunt, throw the punch as early as you can to where it still stuns Bear, then buffer 2 left jabs. Then wait for his next taunt, and buffer one jab and one uppercut since you should have a full super meter by this point. Finally, do the exact same thing for the final taunt, and assuming you were fast enough on the gut punches, he *should* be dizzy at this point.
This dizzy is extremely strict, because for the last 2 gut punches, you have collectively only 2 frames of error between those two that you are allowed to have while still getting the dizzy, meaning you can either be frame perfect on both, lose 1-2 frames on the last punch with the one before it being frame perfect, lose 1-2 frames on the 2nd to the last punch with the one after it being frame perfect, or losing one frame on each of the last two punches. If you are any slower than any of those situations, the dizzy will NOT work with this strategy.
Once Bear is dizzy, just buffer Down to duck, then immediately buffer left gut punch to cancel the duck into a quick duck, throw an additional left gut, and buffer an uppercut for an optimal dizzy knockdown.
In phase 2, you just have to buffer left gut, left jab, left gut and hope that Bear gives you the luck to get knocked down by this. We dont have any hard numbers on this, but the odds are estimated to be about 20% likely that hell allow this uppercut to knock him down.

I think Im going to try for 39.9X, but its going to be really tough at this point due to the difficulty of cutting more frames off of this fight. The TAS time is 39.97 for reference, so there is effectively next to no wiggle room on how perfect you have to play to get that low.")

This one was a pretty tough record to match as is, and there seemed to be no help in terms of buffer strategies for this fight, since the one used during the magic rush attack is known to be 0.1 seconds slower than optimal, which is no good when the record youre going for is perfect.
However, upon closer inspection, Ive found that the reason the buffer strategy during the magic attack is slower is *entirely* due to the first part of the sequence that counters the first of his 3 attacks. It turns out that the 2nd and 3rd counters are indeed frame perfect, meaning I can use 2/3rd of the buffer to my advantage!
With that being said, this fight now requires 7 frame perfect inputs to match the current WR/TAS. The counters in this fight are pretty tricky to time, as you have to wait a certain amount of time after the audio cue associated with each of his attacks finishes before you throw your punch. This amount of time is slightly different for each attack, so getting everything perfect is be tricky to do. I have a couple of pseudo buffers for the first counter, and the final duck in the fight.
My PB from about a decade ago was a 45.95, which I was actually able to match on my first session of attempts, which felt nice. Then I literally pulled this off without any PBs between my old PB and this one, completely skipping over the 45.8X range of times, which is pretty awesome.
After this fight, the next two fights Im looking at doing are of equal difficulty to match the record (9 frame perfect inputs each). The next fight Im probably going to be attempting to match first is Bear Hugger, followed by Piston Hondo, both in the Contender Major Circuit. These two are significantly harder than anything Ive uploaded recently, so expect those two to take quite a while before I upload anything (I might consider uploading PB times on my way to matching the current record for those two; well see!)

Doc Louiss Punch-Out was an exclusive game rewarded to those in 2009 who had enough Club Nintendo points to receive Platinum status for the year. It was also rewarded at the end of Club Nintendos lifespan among a huge list of several other games as a means to spend any lingering points you may still have. This was played on my legitimate copy from 2009, which was transferred over to my Wii U, making recording HDMI footage of this game possible for me.
This is the 1st of 3 fights you will encounter in this short DLC-like game. My old record on this fight was a 40.70, which I set back in 2014. This fight is currently 2 frames from the TAS. Id say this is handily the most difficult fight in this game to match the TAS time on. Ill probably try this fight off and on, but if I dont get an improvement to this soon, then Im happy with settling with this for now.
Each fight has its own rules in regards to Doc Louiss guard. In this particular fight, Doc will block the first punch, then let 4 punches through his guard and block the next 2, and will repeat that pattern constantly. Just like with the Training fight, this is why you see me constantly throwing punches randomly, even if those punches arent part of buffer strategies!
Start this fight off by buffering 3 punches, the first of which Doc will block; the next 2 should land due to Docs guarding mechanic in this fight. Next, counter his uppercut for a star and whiff 3 punches to set up Docs guard for when he gets back to the center of the ring. Youll want to throw 3 punches, but the middle punch needs to be delayed exactly 1 frame so that Docs move timer for his Block this attack can start earlier. This is definitely the most awkward punch in the fight, so be prepared to reset here quite a bit if youre trying this strategy.
You should be set up to counter his Block this attack immediately after the gut punches, and will need to whiff 2 punches so that the following 2 punches go through his guard as he centers himself in the ring. If you do it right, he should immediately go into a Duck this one hook which you should, well, duck, haha. Throw 5 stunned punches and wait until the candybar reaches the left side of the screen to throw your final 2, so that the stun ends just as your punches are landing.
This next Duck this one hook needs to be countered with a right jab, then hell try to center himself again, but your triple star punch will KO him as soon as hes in range of it. I tend to throw my hook as Doc says I in I telegraphed that and buffer a star punch out of the hook.

This run was done on an original Spanish Super Nintendo cartridge of Super Punch-Out, as well as an original PAL Super Nintendo 1chip console that was recapped and modded with the Borti RGB amp.
So heres whats going on, because I know people will have questions about why Im reuploading Gabby Jay here. Super Punch Out has 3 distinct versions of the game: the NTSC version, which is what I was uploading on my channel already, the NTSC-J version, which is almost identical for speedruns aside from Rick Bruiser having a slightly faster time, and then theres the PAL version, which has COMPLETELY different possible times for MANY fights, sometimes solely because the PAL timer has different timer increments due to running at 50 frames a second.
I cant count the number of times people have left comments on my NTSC fights, telling me that MeLeeak has already beaten my times, even though MeLeeak was actually playing on the PAL version all along. I totally get the confusion, because MeLeeaks videos were never labelled as PAL, so its kind of just lumped together with the NTSC times to random people who dont know any better. And like I said on the PAL Narcis video I wanted to go through matching the TAS/WR times for the PAL version because my muscle memory is still a bit strange from the stroke. Its getting better and better over time, but I figured I may as well take advantage of this situation and knock these out before going back to finishing up NTSC Narcis Prince.
The tech setup for this is also kind of weird. Im playing on an actual PAL Super Nintendo on an original cartridge, but the CRT I usually play on cant be used because it cant accept 50Hz PAL signals and display them properly, so I actually had to do these runs through a RetroTink5X. The feed from the RetroTink was kind of weird though, like it was overly dark and super letterboxed and stretched, but it was playable! It looked kind of terrible though, but my console is also a 1Chip console, so I was able to run it through my usual RGB capture setup with the Datapath E1, and it clearly looks amazing through that.
Anyways, lets talk about Gabby Jay! Yay! This is the easiest fight in the game to match the TAS on. You start the fight by pressing nothing for the first frame (00002 on the timer), then for the next frame, you press and hold Up+Y to buffer a left jab. This delay sets Gabbys guard to be down for the next several punches, since he reads your input for the first frame of the fight and guards accordingly.
From here, just let go of Up+Y and press it again before your next punch animation starts, which will ensure your next punch comes out on the first frame possible. Just repeat that until youve thrown out 4 left jabs, then throw a right jab immediately after. The right jab deals more damage, but the main purpose of it is to waste a couple of frames since the right jab is also slower than left jab. This sets you up for either a quick dodge or quick duck to perfectly counter his jab. If you feel like you were 1 frame slow on your first input, you should opt for a quick dodge into a right jab to perfectly set yourself up for a free counter, since his first attack comes out at a predetermined number of frames of Gabby being idle. Quick ducks are one frame slower than quick dodges, so if you think you were frame perfect on the first punch, then you need to opt for a quick duck to waste the extra frame so your punch doesnt come out too early and miss.
Once your counter hits, you need to pause the fight, because when you do a counter punch, you get rewarded 7 arrows in your super meter, but your meter doesnt fill up quickly, so you need to make sure you can throw a super instantly when the game unpauses. When you unpause, just hold A and your super should send Gabby into dizzy status. While hes dizzy, if you hold Y, then let go and hold B while your punch is going off, then youll automatically do the right gut punch after the left one goes off, and then hold Up+A for an uppercut, then Gabby will go down instantly for a KO!
Since Ive gotten PAL Narcis out of the way, the rest of the games fights have magnitudes less luck, and the execution is all very reasonable. Ill be uploading a PAL TAS tie every other couple of days, just because I dont like spamming anyones inbox with an influx of videos all at once. Also, some of the explanations of fights may re-tread the same content as their NTSC counterparts if they end up being similar strategies, and Ill likely be pointing you towards the NTSC fights as well.
Ive actually matched all 16 records in this version of the game, making me the 4th person to have matched all the TAS times for the PAL version, and the first person to have done it on actual original hardware, as the other runners did their runs on emulator, mainly because PAL SNES hardware is pretty awkward to import and do runs on, as Ive come to find out, haha.

Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween today!
This was played on an original Splatterhouse arcade PCB on the H.A.S. supergun. My Splatterhouse PCB also now has the EVERTEN stereo expansion board, so the audio is more clear now with separate stereo channels! This run was done on the hardest difficulty, which starts you at 2HP instead of the default 4HP.
This was also recorded through the Datapath E1 capture card via RGB and upscaled to 4k, so this quality is about as crisp as you can possibly get on real hardware. For comparison, you can check out my slower 13:37 run from a while back which was recorded via S-Video to see how much better the recording quality has gotten: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvgl8DadM6M
It is also worth noting that the game is running at a slightly higher framerate than the home release ports out there (JP Wii VC at 59.94 fps, and the Namco Museum version runs at ~60 fps). This board appears to run at about 60.60 frames a second, so this benefits from small time gains compared to those versions.
So stormcrow56k picked this game up for speedrunning recently, and found a couple of new strategies in a few spots. The main optimization he found was for the stage 2 boss, where he found an approach to kill the chair with one punch and one slidekick, however its extremely difficult and inconsistent, so he also found a backup strategy that minimizes time loss if you dont get it, which helps justify going for it.
Beyond the chair kill, theres a really hard strategy that requires good luck on knives such that they cross in the center of the room, as well as a really difficult jump-punch strategy to take out the 2 airborne knives, which requires pressing jump and punch on the same frame to get Rick to carry his punch state into the air and punch twice in the air. Normally when you do a jump, your first attack will always be a jump kick, and any subsequent attack will be a jump punch (unless you hold down for more jump kicks).
The other big find that stormcrow found was for the Jennifer boss fight in stage 5. Effectively, you can exchange one of the punches early in the the fight with a very late slide kick for the last attack, which saves you one attack and nets you a tiny bit of time.
As far as the overall run, I finally got the optimal stage 2 boss kill! I also cleaned up stages 3 and 4 to be really good again. This was the best pace I had ever been on going into the stage 5 boss, at a whopping 8.4 seconds ahead, but I got a bad pattern from the boss and lost 3 seconds because of it, but quick thinking allowed me to at least keep going. The stage 6 boss ended up losing me some time too, since the quick kill on that one was pretty clean in my 13:36, but here I was super nervous and missed one slide kick input and got some not great patterns, which cost quite a bit of time. The final stage was perfect execution though, with less than a second lost to the final hand being on the same side as the head.
The exact time of this run is a 13:33.397, which beats the old run by a whopping 3.564 seconds (old record was an 13:36.961).
With this run, Ill probably still throw some attempts at it here and there, but Ill likely not do it at the same frequency as I have been doing it for the Halloween holiday unless new strategies pop up. Ill likely start messing with some kind of Punch Out again soon with this run finally being decently solid with the new strategies.

This was a collaboration between myself and ezgames69 after finding out a pretty significant improvement over the previous TAS of his. To clarify, this is not a live run done on an actual console like I usually upload; this is a TAS (tool assisted speedrun), which is a run done on emulator where you do inputs frame by frame, effectively trying to achieve a theoretical best possible time. You can pretty much have your character do everything frame perfectly, mash multiple buttons at inhuman speeds, and manipulate luck events to be perfect in every scenario through your inputs.
So its no secret that Ive been doing a bunch of attempts on this game recently, as well as trying to figure out strategies to help lower the time. Recently, I woke up and had an idea that I pretty much had to test immediately, which was if it were possible to kill the worm miniboss at the end of stage 6 with a standing punch chained into a jump. I had suspicions that since the current TAS didnt do it, that it probably wasnt possible to reach him, but somehow, it killed him sooner!
This improves the TAS by 43 frames, so I collaborated with ezgames69 to try to find more improvements. We went back and forth on a few revisions, but this ended up with us having to resync the TAS so that the slightly different random positions of the ghosts in stage 4 room 1 were accounted for. This in turn, led ezgames to discover another pretty huge time save in terms of kicking away from the loading zones to extend the hitbox backwards in order for the screen to fade sooner!
