This studio put out one of the best games of the year, then Microsoft shut them down.
Tango Gameworks, the creators of Hi-Fi Rush, put out one of the best rhythm games of 2023. It won several awards, had more than 3 million players, and was one of Microsoft’s best releases in recent memory.
So imagine everyone’s surprise when Microsoft shut the studio down right after.
According to Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty, the reason for the shutdown was the departure of Tango Gameworks CEO Shinji Mikami, claiming that without their leader, it would be too difficult to move forward.
To add insult to injury, the next day, Booty put on a Town Hall where he said:
“We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards,” right after shutting down the studio that gave them both of those things.
This Tweet from game manager Kazuaki Egashira says it all. A picture of all the awards Hi-Fi Rush won for Microsoft, asking simply, “Not enough?”
Thankfully, PUBG publisher Krafton decided to give Tango Gameworks a new home, and a Hi-Fi Rush sequel is already in the works.
