We take a look at the EV65U86A Development Board from Microchip. It enables users to rapidly prototype and test new CAN and LIN designs based on the ATA6586 ICs.
Inside the box, you’ll find the EV65U86A evaluation board. Note that this is just one in a family of boards for Microchip’s family of CAN FD and LIN devices that includes controllers, transceivers, SIPs, and optimized SBCs to support high-speed communication in automotive and industrial applications, with options that are AEC-Q100 grade 1 and 0 qualified and ISO 26262 functional safety ready.
In this demo, we’re going to plug the evaluation board into a SAM C21 Xplained Pro Evaluation kit so we can interface with the board using the AT658x GUI.
Plug the EV65U86A into one of the SAM C21 extension headers. Connect a 12-volt power supply to the EV65U86A using either the VBAT header like we are or using the barrel jack. Connect oscilloscope probes to the CANH and CANL pins. Connect the Xplained Pro board to a PC via USB.
In the AT658x GUI, we can perform a quick check of the board by changing the watchdog timer to a 100 millisecond period and activating the Trigger On checkbox. Then set Operating Mode and CAN Transceiver to Normal Mode, select TXD pulsed, set the frequency to 250 kilohertz, and click Set. Now we should see a 250 kilohertz signal on our oscilloscope. The registers tab gives us direct access to the device registers, the SPI tab allows us to issue SPI commands directly to the device, and the CAN tab allows us to send a single shot message for testing.
