Used by guitar players of all persuasions but really brought to prominence by the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen in the 80s, arpeggios are a crucial part of any advanced guitarist’s arsenal. Simply the notes of a chord played individually, arpeggios can help you break out of the “up and down scales” rut. And because they only contain the notes of a chord, they always sound “strong”.
In this video lesson, Elixir Strings artist Mickey Lyxx takes you through a section of his tune “Fester”, which is based entirely around a few arpeggio shapes. There are some good stretches to be found here, and you’ll need to be accurate with your picking hand, but it’s a great workout and functions really well as an arpeggio “etude” for the dedicated!
