Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian remembers Michael Wright as a down-to-earth, genuine person whom he first met while working together on Oz. Jamar recalled that Wright’s mother owned Jezebel’s, a famous restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, and said the two eventually became friends and shared several memorable moments together. One of his favorite memories involved an Oz cast party, where they drank and jokingly sang songs from The Five Heartbeats, including Wright’s character Eddie King’s memorable musical moments.
Jamar also shared a humorous story about being with Wright and the late Mom’s at another Oz party. They went outside to smoke, but Wright suddenly decided to leave just before police arrived and arrested Jamar and Mom’s. Jamar joked that Wright seemed to have sensed the trouble coming, describing it as if his “spider senses” had started tingling moments before the police showed up. He also remembered Wright supporting an independent film, Morning Breath, that Jamar and Mom’s had made and which was screened at NYU.
That final memory was especially meaningful to Jamar because Wright had specifically come to support their film. Although Wright appeared physically frail at the time, Jamar remembered him leaving after seeing their movie and confidently saying that he had “already seen the best one.” Jamar described Michael Wright as a good man with a good spirit whose interactions with him were always positive.
