Michael Nau is back with a new beautiful track. Out today via Karma Chief Records, this release follows his fifth LP, Accompany. The song was recorded over the last few years in Nau’s home studio.
“Smokeflowers” came to be while Michael was searching for sounds on some newly acquired recording gear. It’s a slow, swirly waltz. Nau strums his acoustic guitar over a consistent bass groove, as simple string lines hover in the wings. The lyrics are poetic and thoughtful, but not prescriptive, as Nau leaves plenty of room for the listener to apply their own meaning to each verse. Whitney McGraw, Michael’s wife, sang harmonies on the choruses.
The track feel like a natural next step from Nau’s latest LP, Accompany, which was recorded with a full band and produced and engineered by Adrien Olsen (The Killers, Lucy Dacus, Fruit Bats). Now, as Michael explores and captures new ideas on his own, the resulting sound is stripped back and slightly less refined. “I was testing out a new tape machine that I had, and then I sold it,” he explained. “They’re single songs that just kind of happened without other songs around.” Although the track doesn't find itself on an LP, “Smokeflowers” stands firmly on it's own. Like everything from Nau’s growing catalog, they merit thoughtful listening and reflection from old fans and new.

Decades of New York sounds and voices bend and blend at the seams of these tracks—a world where the Brill Building and Warhol’s Factory thrive on the same block while Blondie and the Frightnrs explore rocksteady sounds. Perhaps the darkest cut on the album. A repetitive minor riff repeats throughout the opening on piano, guitar, vibraphone, and bass. Eventually the drums fall in driving the dark point home with haunting choral background vocals. A flute melody courtesy of Michael Sarason (Say She She) offers some light in the darkness, but it’s not to last. Sounds like a mashup of early David Axelrod with a slightly more sinister lean a la Budos Band.

Tennessees Oliver James, a time-capsule of classic R&B sound, returns to the Colemine label with two new tunes pressed onto one must-have 45.
The A-side features his first new track since 2022. 1-2-3 is an upbeat soul stomper à la Memphis and Stax. Nick DeVan and Vincent John (Eraserhood Sound) co-wrote the track; they finalized the instrumentals but were stumped on the lyrics. Thats when James was called in, and he used his time working at a church to shape the lyrics that eventually became this number.
The B-side was a collaborative effort with Nashvilles gritty-funk ensemble The Gripsweats. Its an earnest song with lyrics inspired by James & DeVans commiseration. Im no stranger to love that I used to know, laments James; his favorite line of the song. Cushioned by lush string and horn arrangements, Nothing Is Forever is a melancholy and heartfelt foil to the A.

The title track from Parlor Greens second studio album is here! Emeralds finds the trio in top form, starting with a slow simmer before falling into an Idris Muhammad-inspired groove and killer top line courtesy of Adam Scone (organ). But the real payoff comes as the tune starts its dramatic conclusion. The slow simmer evolves into a rolling boil as Carman (drums) steadily and expertly brings up the energy while Jimmy James soars on top with a shredding guitar solo.
